Benjamin Franklin’s most iconic saying is that nothing in this world can be certain except death and taxes. Had the legendary statesman lasted another 40 years, he would have likely added a third certainty to that list: That Woolrich clothing will keep you warm during the worst that winter has to offer. Founded in Pennsylvania in 1830, Woolrich has manufactured durable woolen clothing for everyone from 19th century loggers and trappers to Civil War soldiers, Admiral Byrd on his 1940 Antarctic expedition, New England college kids, and New York fashionistas. Basically, when it comes to high-quality American wool, Woolrich is the first name on everyone’s lips. And now that name is teaming up with Target, another iconic, albeit slightly younger, American institution.
Launching today, Target x Woolrich is a capsule collection featuring an assortment of shirts, fleece, jackets, knitwear, and bottoms all based on designs from the Woolrich archives. It’s urban spirit meets outdoor adventure, with a generous helping of Woolrich’s famous buffalo check plaid for good measure, just in case you want to adorn yourself in that most recognizable of winter iconographies. And, most importantly, it’s a collection loaded with easy, cold-weather style. A welcome bonus when your primary concern is less about looking good and more about fending off winter’s icy chill.
This 100-piece limited-run collaboration—which includes apparel, accessories, home, outdoor gear, and even food—features the largest men’s capsule collection ever offered by Target. And all of it is based on classic Woolrich archival pieces, but reinterpreted in a contemporary way. And, best of all, it’s done using Target’s more democratic approach to fashion. “For us, these collaborations are about giving access to great design,” says Gigi Guerra, head of design partnerships at Target. “Because access should not come at the expense of quality.”
Woolrich has long been a standard-bearer for classic American heritage. (With a history that dates back to the Andrew Jackson presidency, it would be hard not to be.) But that sort of heritage, especially when combined with quality construction, can be rough on the wallet. Which is where a big retailer like Target comes in. “It’s an economy of scale,” Guerra says 0f being able to produce high-quality pieces from brands like Woolrich at consumer-friendly prices and numbers. “We have one of the largest in-house design teams in the U.S. and experts across all categories of business. So we can bring stuff to market that no one else can.”
For Woolrich, this was the primary appeal of the partnership. “We saw this collaboration as a powerful way to connect with a new generation of consumers, while staying true to Target’s reputation for making high-quality design accessible,” says Heekyun Kim, Woolrich’s creative director. “They’re curating collaborations that feel both special and inclusive.” A fact corroborated by the success of past collaborations with brands like Kate Spade New York, Diane von Furstenberg, and Champion.
Of course, bringing a storied brand to a wider audience isn’t the only reason the two brands joined forces. There was also the shared desire to marry both style and function in a collection that caters to the growing demand for quality outdoor gear that can transition from nature to city and back again. “What we loved about Woolrich is that one of their missions is to empower life in the elements,” says Guerra. “And their whole thing is that a life is lived outdoors. But it’s in both natural and urban environments. It’s a walk in the woods, but also waiting at a bus stop in New York.”
Needless to say, for a brand that’s kitted out everyone from Admiral Byrd to Kurt Cobain, it’s hard to imagine anyone more suited to making outdoor-wear for all situations. And, to that end, the Target x Woolrich collection delivers. Highlights include a fleece mountain graphic zip-up jacket, a sheep graphic crewneck sweater (the sheep is Woolrich’s mascot, because, well, wool and so forth), a range of flannel shirts, and acres and acres of buffalo plaid, a pattern widely associated with the brand, but also possibly named by it. It’s alleged that Woolrich co-founder John Rich named the pattern “buffalo check” after his own private herd of buffalo.
Historic pattern-naming rights aside, the collection features some seriously cool buffalo check offerings, including a fleece vest, a wool crewneck sweater, a knit shirt jacket, a quilted parka, a range of blankets, and, of course, a flannel shirt. For anyone looking to rep buffalo plaid every day of the week this winter, the Target x Woolrich collection is your own personal Xanadu.
And while the collection adds plenty of elements of modern flair, it’s still firmly rooted in the timelessness that Woolrich is famous for—what Heekyun Kim calls a dialogue between the old and the new. “Seeing a classic Woolrich flannel shirt paired with tailored trousers, or one of our jackets styled in unexpected ways, it shows how Woolrich continues to live and evolve in real life, across generations,” Kim says. And now, thanks to Target, a much bigger portion of those generations will get to enjoy it.
