LEARN MORE

Fans of Outlander know that amongst the romance and bravery, there’s no shortage of grief, loss and sadness in this series, and with Season 8 here, we can’t help but look back on the characters we’ve lost. While yes, there have most certainly been a handful of folks we’ve been happy to see meet their demise thanks to their villainous ways, there have also been many characters whose deaths have truly shocked us. Whether their departure was met with tears or surprise by viewers at home, take a look at six of the saddest, most shocking Outlander deaths.

6. Frank Randall

Frank Randall, Claire’s first husband, was a complicated character—and with Jamie playing such an important role in who Claire became as a person, it was hard as a viewer to root for her to be with anyone but Jamie. However, there were times throughout Frank’s life in the television series that showed him to be a good husband to Claire and, as a flawed human being, times when he wasn’t so great. However, most fans ultimately give him a bit of grace, knowing how difficult it must have been to know Claire could never forget or truly move on from Jamie. When Frank ultimately dies in a car accident, it marks a tragic end to their complicated relationship.

5. Alex Randall

The younger brother of Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall, Alex differed entirely from his cruel older brother. His death was a tragic one, having passed as a result of consumption, and while he was alive, he fell for Mary Hawkins. Hawkins became pregnant with his child, and before he passed, he convinced his brother to marry her so she and their unborn child could have security.

4. Dougal MacKenzie

Dougal was another complicated character who ultimately met his death at the hands of his own nephew, Jamie. When Dougal overhears Jamie and Claire conspiring to kill Prince Charles in an effort to prevent the Battle of Culloden, the trio fight it out before Jamie delivers the final blow, stabbing him. While Dougal was the one initiating this fight, it didn’t make it any easier for Jamie to kill the man who was once his mentor.

3. Angus

Angus became a beloved character early in the series, making his death one of the most heartbreaking. After the Battle of Prestonpans, he tends to his brother, Rupert, as he recovers from his injuries, ignoring the severity of his own. Shocking everyone, he succumbs to his internal injuries in a gut-wrenching end that has stuck with Outlander fans ever since.

2. Faith

One of the show’s greatest tragedies was the stillbirth of Claire and Jamie’s daughter, Faith, and it’s something they have carried with them even into Season 8. After giving birth to Faith, not only is Claire entirely traumatized, but she also suffers from an infection that nearly takes her, marking it as one of the toughest storms they’ve had to weather.

1. Murtagh Fitzgibbons

Murtagh’s history is one we got to know in Outlander, but came to understand even more in the prequel series, Blood of My Blood. In Outlander, Murtagh is Jamie’s fierce protector, having made a vow to Jamie’s mother to look after him and keep him safe. His tragic death at the Battle of Alamance came as a result of his keeping that promise, and he tragically passed on in Jamie’s arms.

As we prepare to say goodbye to Outlander with Season 8, these losses remind us why this series has meant so much to so many. Through every heartbreak, every sacrifice and every tear-filled farewell, we’ve witnessed the power of love, loyalty and the unbreakable bonds that connect us all. That’s the legacy these characters leave behind—and it will stay with us long after the final episode airs.
