Ever found yourself drowning in a sea of meeting notes or grumbling through hours of interview transcriptions, wishing there was a faster, smarter way to handle it all? Trust me, I’ve been there—from endless internships spent manually typing out chats with big-shot celebs to juggling my own mountain of notes. Enter the Plaud NotePin S: a pocket-sized wizard promising to flip the script on how we record, transcribe, and remember conversations. Sounds like sci-fi, right? But could this nifty little gadget really be the ultimate sidekick for anyone shackled to endless meetings or client calls? Let’s unravel the mystery behind this AI-powered marvel and see if it’s worth the hype—or just another tech gimmick. LEARN MORE

At my first internship (unpaid, FWIW), I spent a majority of my days transcribing interviews from the senior editors who had spent their days chatting up actors and Hollywood bigwigs. In the intervening years, I’ve toiled countless hours jotting down notes in meetings or transcribing interviews of my own. It’s always been thankless work. Now, with everything from celebrity interviews to corporate meetings, the process of recording, taking minutes, and transcription is being automated.
If you’ve seen this AI note-taking pin on your feeds, you know what I’m talking about. The Plaud NotePin S is a pocket-sized device that has been gaining in popularity, but among my less tech-obsessed friends and colleagues who scroll past it on TikTok there is some confusion about what it even is. Is it a recorder, or does it take notes for you? How does it work? What even is this thing?

The NotePin S is all of the above and a little more, in an extremely convenient form factor. The device fits in the palm of your hand and has a single button. You can slide on the magnetized clip to attach it to your shirt pocket or lapel, but the NotePin S also comes with a wristband and lanyard attachments. Put it where you find most comfortable and then just download the app and sync the device to your phone to get started.
To start or stop a recording either long-press the NotePin’s button or hit the record button on the app. At any point during recording, if you want to highlight a specific conversation to return to later, just give the button a single tap. Once the meeting is over, the real magic begins. The AI will generate an outline, a summary, meeting minutes, and action items. If you go back to the source audio, you will see an outline alongside a line-by-line transcription. You can also import audio from external sources and have it spit out a detailed breakdown. It’s generative AI, powered by all the usual suspects, so it’s going to make mistakes. But it also has a “memory,” and if you teach it, it can “learn.”
How useful is this to ordinary people who haven’t spent the past decade carving out a career in media? I just don’t know yet. Plenty of jobs require note-taking and transcriptions, and most of corporate America is sitting in a meeting while they read this right now. And it could be a big time-saver for anyone with patients or clients (read: doctors, lawyers, important jobs).
But at the end of the day, spending money out of your pocket on something you will use for work is a tricky ask. There’s a very good argument to be made that in a few years your smartphone will be able to do just as good of a job with its onboard voice-recorder app. But for now? This little piece seems like the best option.
