Uncover the Surprising Secrets Behind the Legendary Hannah Montana Wig That Changed Pop Culture Forever
Have you ever stopped to think that sometimes a wig isn’t just a wig—it’s a whole mood, a secret identity, even a symbol of dreams coming true? Well, if you grew up with Disney Channel in the mid-2000s, you know exactly what I mean. Hannah Montana’s iconic blonde wig did way more heavy lifting than just sitting pretty on Miley Cyrus’s head—it separated the star from the girl next door and launched a pop culture phenomenon that turned 20 this year. Now, with Miley herself revisiting the set in a special Disney+ tribute, it’s the perfect moment to peel back the layers (and strands) of that legendary look. Wondering how a wig could hold so much power and why it still captures hearts decades later? Trust me, the story behind those golden tresses is as riveting as the show itself.
Sometimes, a wig tells a deeper story—especially if you’re Hannah Montana.
The famous Disney Channel series, loved by many a millennial, is turning 20 this week. Ahead of the show’s anniversary, Miley Cyrus teased that she wanted to pay homage to the character that changed her life—and kick-started her career as a bona fide superstar—with some sort of special one-night-only event. Tonight, that dream finally comes true, when Disney+ will air a pretaped special where Cyrus goes back to the set of Hannah Montana—alongside some friends, family, and, yes, even Call Me Daddy host Alex Cooper—to look back at the famous series.
“The fact that it still means so much to people all these years later is something I’m very proud of,” Cyrus shared in a press statement after the special was announced. “This ‘Hannahversary’ is my way of celebrating and thanking the fans who’ve stood by me for 20 years.”
It’s without question, when looking back at the legacy of the series, that there would be no Hannah Montana without her equally famous wig. The wig, after all, is what separated the fictional, industry-optimized Hannah from the real, normal girl that was Miley Stewart. Hannah was sleek and blond and screamed “star power,” while Miley’s real-life strands were chestnut brown and often in prim, early-aughts-adjacent waves. Miley was the girl next door. Hannah was who every girl wanted to be.
To mark the 20th anniversary of Hannah Montana, Harper’s Bazaar spoke with the show’s original lead hairstylist, Brenda Blatt, to look back at the making of one of TV’s most recognizable wigs—along with what it means for Hannah Montana to still resonate with fans and viewers all these years later.
Do you remember when you first got the call for Hannah Montana? What was your initial reaction to the concept?
When I got the call for Hannah Montana, I had never worked in children’s television, but I love creating fun characters, and the concept of the Miley/Hannah dual identity was a “yes, please”!
What are the earliest conversations you can remember about the conceptualization of the wig?
The pilot had already been shot using an inexpensive blond wig that, while perfect for the gags, didn’t really sell Hannah as a true superstar. It needed to look real and stylish, hair that a teenage girl dreams of having. We tested various versions of blond until we found Hannah. After that, we were fortunate to have Natascha Hahn, one of Hollywood’s most talented and trusted wigmakers, work her magic. The Hannah wig was designed and measured to fit Miley’s head using fine European hair and colored to our desired effect.
What were the “pop star” characteristics you knew the wig needed to embody, versus Miley Stewart’s hair look?
In order to define each character, her hair was an excellent device. For the Miley Stewart persona, the idea was to use Miley’s gorgeous warm brunette hair using curls and waves, sometimes messy updos and barrettes or headbands, while Hannah would have straight, silky blond hair with bangs. I wanted Hannah’s hair to move and fly when she danced without becoming tangled or messy. The bangs just said, “Pow! Now she’s Hannah!”
Do you remember Miley’s first reaction to seeing or trying on the Hannah Montana wig? Did she chime in regarding the overall look?
As I recall, Miley’s first reaction was excitement because it was really real. She was Hannah! Because she was part of the tests, she could give her input throughout the whole process. Miley is so creative, so of course she would ask for tweaks to Hannah’s style here and there, but mostly she was so chill and such a professional, and she trusted us to do our jobs while she worried about what music we were playing in the trailer.
What’s the secret to making a wig appear flawless on screen?
I can’t imagine I’ve ever done anything flawless, ha! But to make a wig work and feel authentic, it’s best to begin with a well-made wig that fits, or is tucked and pinned to fit, so the artist can feel like it belongs to them. So if they want to tuck it behind their ear or flip it back, they can, and it looks natural in the scene or performance. The artist plays a major role as well in how they behave while wearing it; they are a huge part of the magic. Miley was a petite girl who was wearing a lot of hair, and she made it look amazing. Oh, and lots of touch-ups between takes.
What important tweaks and changes were done over the years as the series went on to modernize the wig?
I’m not sure if the fans want to know … but there were many wigs over the seasons. As Hannah matured, her hair got longer, and so did Miley Stewart’s. Sometimes Hannah had some wave or crimping and Miley wore her hair straight. For season 3, we did some tests for a shorter—a little longer than shoulder length—beach-wave look for Hannah that looked stylish and a bit older. When I showed those looks to the director of the Hannah Montana movie, he loved them, and so that’s the look we used for the film, as well as a Miley Stewart look that was long, straight, and softly natural. By season 4, Hannah was long again and wavy, and Miley Stewart was long, fuller, and edgier.
Did you have any idea when you were working on Hannah Montana that the wig would be referenced for years to come?
I was aware that with the show’s storyline and talent, we were doing something extraordinary. The Hannah wig symbolized the power to live your dreams, whether it was on Hannah’s head or coming off for a “reveal,” which it often did. Whenever kids visited our makeup trailer, they were obsessed with it—even just staring at the wig head. “Is this really Hannah’s wig?” they’d ask. I was aware that the wig was special, but that it would be in itself iconic? I had no idea.
