Hype is huge for the return of Blade the vampire hunter, played by Mahershala Ali. But it’s also feeling a bit long in the fang.
Made famous in a trilogy of movies featuring Wesley Snipes pre-MCU, the half-vampire, full-time killer helped pave the way for the superhero-film resurgence in the late 2000s. Now, after Snipes’ amazing farewell in Deadpool & Wolverine, Mahershala Ali is set to take over in the MCU’s reboot.
But production on the movie has stalled, with a number of writers and directors coming through the project like a revolving door. During a July 2025 press conference ahead of the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Kevin Feige opened up about the delays surrounding Blade, blaming it on Marvel’s over-expansion.
“We didn’t want to simply just put a leather outfit on him [Mahershala Ali] and have him start killing vampires. It had to be unique,” Feige said to the journalists in attendance. “It fell into the time when we started pulling back and saying, ‘Only accept insanely great.’ And it wasn’t ‘insanely great’ at the time.”
For now, Blade is delayed indefinitely. But you can’t keep a good vampire hunter down for long.
