When you want to bring something new into the bedroom, you probably think about trying a different position or suggesting a sexual fantasy. You don’t think about literally bringing in a pillow because, well, they’re already there, right? While you can always try using a regular pillow to make sex more comfortable, there are certain angles and positions you might only be able to do with the help of a sex pillow.

Unlike a soft, rectangular-shaped pillow designed for sleep, a sex pillow is usually a firm, wedge-shaped piece of foam covered in soft material, like cotton or velour. Shape and size can depend on your personal preference, though, and there are even inflatable options for discreet, space-saving storage. Plus, some come with spicy features, like wrist cuffs and vibrator mounts.

While the specifics vary, all sex pillows help partners play around with positions and angles, says Jess O’Reilly, PhD, a sexologist and host of the Sex With Dr. Jess podcast. “You might discover new ways to access your lover’s hottest spots during oral simply by propping their hips up on a sex pillow,”she explains. “Or you might find that the angle of doggy style is more comfortable for longer periods of time when you have the support of a sex pillow.”

Many people also specifically use sex pillows for deeper penetration, says Debra Laino, DHS, a sex therapist and author of The Missing Link: A Fusion of Sexuality, Lifespan Development and You. For example, the receiving partner (a.k.a. the person being penetrated) can place the sex pillow under their lower back to angle their pelvis up, which changes the angle of penetration, allowing the other partner to go deeper. Or, if you feel like your partner’s penis or dildo is poking you in an annoying way, the pillow can tilt your pelvis to a more comfortable position, Laino adds.

This can be especially helpful if one or both partners have limited mobility. “Historically, sex pillows were primarily marketed toward older folks who had joint issues or bad knees because they made sex positions more comfortable,” says Emily Jamea, PhD, a sex therapist and host of the Love & Libido podcast. “[But] they’re now marketed toward people of all ages, because everyone ended up liking them.” With so many uses, what’s not to love?

Best Sex Pillows of 2026

Read on for more info about WH’s top choices, along with everything you need to know about shopping for and using a sex pillow.

1. Dame Pillo

You already trust Dame to make high-quality sex toys, so is it any surprise that they make a top-notch sex pillow, too? The wedge shape can be used to lift the hips, knees, ankles—you name it—for new and better penetration angles, and the foam filling strikes the perfect balance between soft and firm. But perhaps the best thing about this sex pillow is that it doesn’t look like a sex pillow. Thanks to the sophisticated design, you could totally leave it on your bed as a “foot rest.” Plus, its 100-percent cotton cover comes in two colors (indigo and oat) and is removable for easy washing.

2. Triangle Inflatable Ramp

This is an Amazon bestseller, and you can’t beat the $19 price tag. The NaEnsen is covered in velvety fabric to keep you comfortable. It’s also easy to clean with soap and warm water. All you have to do is inflate it, and, when you’re done, deflate and stow it away. It’s that simple!

3. Liberator Black Label Wedge with Cuffs

This wedge pillow is oh-so-versatile. It features a classic sex pillow shape to help lift your hips and allow you to experiment with angles. But it also contains wrist cuffs and a blindfold so you can take your bondage fantasies to the next level.

4. Liberator Wanda

You can use this versatile pillow for solo play or partnered sex—it’s your choice! The Wanda was designed to hold a wand vibrator (hence the name), but the mount also works with most large vibrators and dildos, so you can experience different types of stimulation. Couples can also use this pillow with doggy style, cowgirl, and missionary positions, especially if they want to experiment with dual penetration.

5. Liberator Ramp and Wedge Combo

Why choose just one pillow when you can have several? This ramp and wedge combo allows you to experiment with different angles and shapes. “Liberator makes pillows in a variety of shapes, and [this one is] good for options,” Jamea says.

6. Adam & Eve Inflatable Position Pillow

This classic wedge-shaped pillow helps you get good angles for just about every position. It’s also covered in a velvety surface and has handles for gripping. Inflating this pillow takes just a few minutes via an electric pump, so you can get right to it. “I personally like this one for its space-saving practicality,” O’Reilly says.

7. Liberator Decor Flip Ramp

This sex pillow might look like an ottoman, but it actually unfolds to offer comfort and support for countless positions (thank you, cushy foam). You and your partner can lie—or stand or kneel—in any direction at any point over the curved pillow without getting tired or achy during longer marathons. Not that you’re likely to have one of those, since you’ll both probably finish in minutes.

8. Lovers Cushion

You may have heard the term “ergonomic” (as in, designed to support your body’s actual shape) when shopping for an office chair, and it applies here too. This sex pillow lifts your hips and allows your partner’s knees to settle into a more comfortable position, creating the, erm, closest experience possible. It doesn’t sound sexy, but let’s be honest—when your joints and muscles are happy, sex is so much better.

How to Choose the Right Sex Pillow for You

If you don’t want to invest in a sex pillow and hope for the best (fair), O’Reilly suggests experimenting a little with your regular pillows first to get a feel for what you’d want in a sex pillow. “See where they come in handy—and where they might get in the way—before purchasing a pillow specifically for sex,” she says. (Just, ya know, change the cover before you put your head on it for bed.)

“If you find you need many pillows to prop yourself into comfortable positions, consider a larger pillow that is firm,” O’Reilly says. “You may also discover that you like your body to be angled—butt up high and face down low. If this is the case, you’ll likely want a triangular shaped wedge.” And, if you’re into using just one pillow, O’Reilly suggests picking a smaller sex pillow that you might use alongside your regular pillows.

How to Use a Sex Pillow

While it might look pretty basic, you can use a sex pillow a bunch of different ways. The standard is via a ramped-up missionary position, with the receiving partner’s butt on the pillow and their hips in the air. But the person being penetrated can also flip over so their stomach is on the pillow and their butt is in the air for a version of doggy-style that takes pressure off of the wrists and hands.

FYI: Sex pillows aren’t just for the receiver. The giving partner, whether they have a penis or wear a strap-on, can prop their butt up with the pillow to bring a whole new angle into the mix, too.
