Olivia Dean isn’t the kind of pop star who morphs into a new persona when the spotlights turn on. “I think I’m always Olivia Dean,” the 26-year-old Londoner says philosophically. “There’s definitely an element where, when I’m on stage, it is an enhancement, but it’s all me, and I like to kind of carry that glamour as much as I can into my personal life.”

Life is only getting more glamorous for Dean. Last month, her smooth, retro-inflected love songs won her a Best New Artist Grammy, and today, she’s being announced as a global brand partner with Hourglass Cosmetics, the high-end, cruelty-free beauty company. It’s a logical partnership for an artist who has already mastered a signature natural-but-elegant beauty look, with fresh, glowing skin as her hallmark.

Dean’s role at Hourglass involves curating a series of mini beauty wardrobes—known as The Olivia Edit—based around the products she’s already using. The first one includes Hourglass’s Veil Hydrating Skin Tint, Vanish Airbrush Concealer, and the brand-new Unreal Liquid Highlighter, all of which include skincare ingredients for a bright, even, and bouncy complexion.

Ahead of the launch, Dean sat down with Bazaar to talk about her favorite products, where she wants to go next, and her ongoing belief in infusing glamour into everyday life. As she put it, “I do like to wear heels when I’m walking down the street, going to the shops. Why not? Let’s try!”

What was the first beauty product you remember using, and how did it make you feel?

My first introduction to beauty was going into my mom’s room and playing secretly with her things. But I think the first thing that I owned for myself was Dream Matte Mousse. I think it was Maybelline. Everybody had to have that, and you’d really slather it on. Now I’m all about glowy and dewy, but when you’re younger, you’re just trying things out.

These days, is there one product that you can’t live without?

At the moment, it’s all about lip products. I need to have five in my bag in all different shades, depending on what I might be doing.

I like the Hourglass Glossy Balm because it gives that little touch of elegance. It feels light, but looks glossy. It gives you a tint, and I like to pair it with a lip liner as well.

Do you have a favorite lip combo?

If it’s the evening, I like a dark brown and then a pinky middle. And if it’s the daytime, I’ll go for a pinkier kind of mauve lip liner, and then a lighter shade.

I want to ask you about brows, too. What products are you using?

I don’t really leave the house unless I’ve got some brow gel on. If your eyebrows are up and looking healthy, then that makes you feel like you have your shit together. I think I’ve tried every brow gel under the sun. My favorite one is the Refy brow gel. It has that hold and that power that I need to last throughout the day.

You’re always so glowy. What are your foundation secrets?

For me, it’s always about skin tint and quite lightweight foundation. I want my skin to come out underneath. I don’t want it to be about covering. I just want it to be about enhancing. The Hourglass Skin Tint is fab. It gives me that lightweight but kind of made-up look, but it doesn’t feel overdone.

Does your routine change when you’re on tour?

Sometimes on tour, there isn’t time to have the luxury to do the whole thing. If I’m moving between places a lot, I kind of have to condense my routine. So it’s normally brow gel, Hourglass concealer, a bit of blush, maybe a lip. I’d probably do that on the way out. And then we’re done.

No right or wrong answer here, but do you think of yourself as a beauty girl?

Yes and no. There are people who know lots more—who really know all the products and all the special tricks—but I love feeling beautiful, whatever that means to me. And I love the ritual of getting ready and matching a look to your outfit or your hair, and just playing with how you present. That makes such a big difference to how you feel. So yeah, I am a beauty girl, but in a relaxed, holistic way.

Are there any people who really inspire what you’re doing in terms of beauty?

Naturally, I’m always looking back into the past for inspiration. I’m a sucker for timelessness. I’m always looking at photos of Diana Ross. I love Audrey Hepburn. I just like quite classic, simple things in life.

Diana Ross really played with makeup. She would do the big eyelashes and that really distinctive eye. So I might move into playing a bit more.

I love this for you. Is there anything you’ve learned about beauty since you started having a makeup artist and being famous and going out into the world that you didn’t know before?

Gosh, so much. It’s been a real education. I really didn’t know a lot when I first came into doing music, but I think ultimately it’s always about “less is more.” If you look after your skin, it just allows everything to kind of glide on top. So I really focus a lot on my skincare and my evening routine, the taking off as well. I think there’s an art to that, as much as the putting on.

Do you have any favorite skincare products?

Gosh, I use all sorts of things on my face. You know the Medicube face masks that everyone loves? I tried that, and I said, ‘You know what? Yeah, I feel like I have glass skin now, guys.’ The hype is real.

What’s the best beauty advice you’ve ever gotten from anyone?

My mom was always so clear with me that my hair was my beauty and to really look after it. I’ve never dyed my hair. I’ve never really done anything crazy with my hair. I just have my mom’s voice in my head, being like, ‘Look after it. It’s your beauty.’ And I’m so proud of my hair. I used to really feel quite self-conscious about it being too big or wild, but I’ve really grown out of that way of thinking. I think that it makes me individual.

Are there any trends happening in the world of beauty right now that you love, or, alternately, any trends that you know you’ll never get into?

Thin brows—no. I’m trying to thicken the brow. I’m out with that trend. I’m keeping it classic.

Let me ask you about getting-ready rituals. How do you psych yourself up emotionally?

I always love to play music. I know that feels like an obvious thing to do, but that can really set the tone for me. I love romantic soundtracks, maybe French or Italian, kind of ‘60s drama. Let’s really get into the character.

Last question: Are you a “put on lipstick every time you go out the door” kind of girl?

Yes! Now that I’ve gotten attached to being so glamorous at work, it’s quite hard to not want to feel like that all the time. So it is kind of a “lip liner and lip gloss on the airplane” situation.
