Ever wonder why boat shoes have this uncanny knack for slipping between casual comfort and borderline rebellion? They’re like the sneaky middle child of footwear—part sandal, part sneaker, all attitude. I get it—maybe you’ve been burned before by those cliché pairs that never saw the deck of a boat but sure as hell made it to the basement frat scene. But here’s the kicker: the boat shoe game has changed. Just like we’ve seen cargo pants and dad sneakers make their unapologetic comebacks, boat shoes are back with some fresh tweaks that ditch the tired tropes without losing their laid-back charm. So, whether you’re the classic style purist or the guy who’s ready to throw in a thicker sole, extra eyelets, or monochrome vibes, now’s the perfect time to dip your toes back in. Ready to sail into style without the cringe?

Boat shoes sit somewhere between a sandal and a sneaker. They work on a beach in hot weather like a sandal, and you can easily play with the color and fabric like a sneaker. If you’re scarred by pairs that never saw the deck of a boat, only the basement the inside of a frat house, fear not. The time to dip your toe back in is now.
I am by no means a style purist, and I am sure as hell not a boat shoe purist. The original Sperry Top-Sider was built with a thin rubber sole with siping to keep you from slipping around on a wet deck, usually in a lighter color so it wouldn’t scuff things up. Much like cargo pants and dad sneakers, all we need to do to make a boat shoe feel good again is tweak a few things. If you want to tell me that half of these hardly count as boat shoes, that is kind of the point.
If you want to go classic, sure—grab a Sperry, Sebago, or G.H. Bass. But if you want to change it up, look for subtle upgrades in a Timberland, Paraboot, or Morjas. Add an extra eyelet or two. Go for a thicker, lugged sole instead of that thin rubber one. Swap leather for suede. Or, one of our favorite tricks right now, go monochrome—where the laces, upper, and sole all match. Our favorites of the season, here.
For a classic that doesn’t carry quite the same baggage as Sperry, Sebago is an excellent option. They’re comfortable, relatively affordable, and hit all the traditional notes—rubber sole, leather upper, clean shape—without feeling overly preppy or trendy. In a waxed brown, they just look good.
First up is Paraboot, which is really more like a boat boot. It sits a bit higher, has a chunky sole, and comes done up in all black, which feels far enough away from preppy as a boat shoe can get. That’s exactly why we like it. It’s more expensive, sure, but also more wearable in that it doesn’t read quite as casual as your standard boat shoe.

There are a few all-time boat shoes that have quietly been around forever, and the Timberland Authentics are one of them. These are the three-eyelet, lug-sole pairs that, yes, technically blur the line a bit. Are they a boat shoe? Style director Jonathan Evan says: Kinda! Are we counting them here? Absolutely. They’re comfortable, a little irreverent, and still hold up, without carrying the same preppy connotation.
Vagabond is a bit of a sneaky pick here. The brand has been around for a while, and they make very, very soft leather shoes—great if you hate breaking things in. They’re also a nice middle ground in price: not cheap, but not crazy pricey either.
This pair leans slightly preppy with the brown leather and brass eyelets, but the thicker sole and four-eyelet setup make it feel different enough. It’s the kind of shoe you could wear business casual in the summer, maybe with a linen pant, without it feeling like an unwelcome throwback.
If you are a Sperry diehard, go for it. Just maybe go for it with not the exact pair you had before. Sperry’s newer versions play with the formula a bit more: three eyelets instead of two, a thicker lug sole, and uppers that mix leather with suede in a mock-toe construction. They still feel like boat shoes, but they’re a little less obvious about it.
If you want something a little edgier, AllSaints is a good place to look. This boat shoe is not trying to be nautical in any way. They feel more like a boat shoe crossed with a city boot—distressed, slightly beat-up, and very much on the darker, more urban side. If you tend to wear a lot of black or muted tones, this is an easy way in.

MORJAS
” data-vars-ga-product-id=”efb94d77-c679-4ec2-ad20-55fd5fe8d597″ data-vars-ga-product-retailer-id=”db378a15-42da-4df4-a3b6-a9456d0f57b0″ data-vars-ga-link-treatment=”(not set) | (not set)” class=”product-image-link ebgq4gw4 e12px3ys0 css-g6od0w e1socmtw0″>
Morjas is a bit of a sleeper hit, especially for something that can pass in a business casual setting. The shape is still fairly classic and low profile, but everything is done in a monochrome palette: brown or black, with matching laces, eyelets, and sole. That makes the whole thing feel a little more like a loafer at first glance, even though it wears like a boat shoe.

Lastly, G.H. Bass’s Jetty 2 in suede. If you’re the kind of guy wearing boat shoes in Brooklyn, this is probably the move. It’s classic, well-made, and comes in really solid colors in tan, olive, black. It has that same appeal as a Weejun, just in boat shoe form: familiar, easy, and done right.
