Flashback to nearly two decades ago, when my wife Kate and I were scrimping and saving and Planet Fitness was our affordable refuge. But as time passed, I became that garage-gym zealot, shaking my head at globo-gyms and preaching free weights only. Yet here I am, middle-aged and a little wiser, realizing that machines actually deserve a spot in the strength-building world. So, I started wondering — did I totally misjudge Planet Fitness and its kin?
Recently, I circled back to one of those infamous purple citadels, armed with a day pass and curiosity — and honestly? The experience caught me off guard in a big way.
