Let’s consider The Fantastic Four: First Steps a solid leadoff double. The plot here is fairly simple—on Earth-828 (an alternate world from any Marvel action we’ve seen before), Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), and Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) have been christened as the Fantastic Four, the protectors and heroes of earth. So what do they do when the Silver Surfer (a fantastic Julia Garner) arrives, heralding Galactus’s (Ralph Ineson) arrival and plans to eat the planet whole? That simple plot allows for something a little more important: A focus on making sure audiences know and love each member of the titular quartet.

The movie features some stunning visuals (a race between the Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer through space against time as Sue gives birth is the highlight of the film), and is certainly exciting enough to have us excited to see where things go with these characters when they return in Avengers: Doomsday.

MCU understanding needed? Absolutely none. It might be the best thing about the movie—The Fantastic Four: First Steps is totally untethered from anything that came before or might come after.
