If you go into Deadpool & Wolverine expecting a fun Deadpool film, and a tribute of sorts to some periphery films and characters of Marvel past, you’re going to have a decent time. The titular roles here have become Ryan Reynolds’s and Hugh Jackman’s signatures for a reason, and they prove here once again that they know what they’re doing. This film is a fairly straight-forward story (though the plot is razor-thin, if we’re being real) that culminates with a number of surprise cameos and guest appearances that bring things together (along with the expected excess of vulgar humor and bloody violence).

Expect tons of action, a joke every ten seconds, and, like Deadpool 2, a surprising amount of character depth; Jackman is great, but when he’s doling out legitimate acting in long monologues, it really makes Reynolds’s snarky shtick feel extra annoying. I digress—they’re joined by a great performance from Emma Corrin (as the villainous Cassandra Nova) and an OK one from Matthew Macfadyen (as TVA square Mr. Paradox). Perhaps the biggest impact here, though, could be proving that the MCU can make an R-rated movie and come away with lots and lots of money. Blade, we hear you coming in the distance!!!

MCU understanding needed? A ton of Marvel movies, both MCU and non-MCU, are referenced throughout the film. Know as much as you possibly can, but a lot of the jokes are also explained within the moment, so you won’t be missing too much. If you want to watch anything to prepare, we’d suggest Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan.
