Unlock the Untold Secrets of Wednesday Season 1 That Will Supercharge Your Binge-Watching Game!

Remember that time a dance routine turned an already spooky show into an absolute cultural smash? Yeah, that was Wednesday’s first season lighting up Netflix’s charts—in part thanks to Jenna Ortega’s killer choreography and Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary” remix making everyone’s playlists a little eerier. Now, almost three years later, our favorite gothic teen is back for season two, navigating the thrills and chills of Nevermore Academy with all-new mysteries and, of course, some very questionable supernatural schoolmates. But here’s a question: with the show split into two halves and the cast shaking up a bit, will Wednesday still have that same magnetic pull, or are we in for a whole new kind of weird? Buckle up—the Addams family legacy isn’t just resting in the shadows anymore. LEARN MORE

IT’S NO SURPRISE that Wednesday got a second season, as even an ounce of the show’s popularity would have had Netflix giving it the green light—but the first season proved to be one of the streaming giant’s most successful and watched shows ever. For those who don’t remember, it had a viral moment with Wednesday’s free-spirited dance scene; the dance, which in the show was originally set to “Goo Goo Muck” by The Cramps, received a viral edit set to Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary”—and totally blew up from there. Jenna Ortega, who plays the title character and daughter of The Addams Family in this iteration, had choreographed it herself—using Siouxsie Sioux and goth dance clubs of decades past as the inspiration.

The scene proved to be the season’s defining aspect, as Lady Gaga’s track skyrocketed to the top of the charts, and even led her to join the show’s cast in season 2. As for the general plot, Wednesday is navigating being away at school for the first time. Thankfully, she has no shortage of supernatural schoolmates to keep her company… for better and for worse.

It’s been nearly three years since the show debuted in fall 2022, so a lot has changed since then and it might be hard to remember what exactly took place. Although the show’s renewal was confirmed in January 2023, things were soon halted by the Writers Guild of America strike from May to September of 2023. The Screen Actors Guild was also on strike from July to November of the same year.

The key thing to know for season 2 is that it will be split into two parts. Although fans can binge the first half on Aug. 6, the latter half won’t be available until Sept. 3. Filming wrapped in December 2024, and there will only be eight episodes this season. Netflix also confirmed that the spooky series was renewed for season 3 in July 2025, speaking to their confidence in the program’s continued popularity.

As Wednesday finally makes its season 2 return, here’s a quick refresher on what you’ll need to know and remember before you push play.

What do I need to remember about Wednesday before season 2?

The first season of Wednesday focused on Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán) deciding to send their gothic daughter to Nevermore Academy. At school, she meets her bubbly werewolf roommate Enid (Emma Myers), a barista named Tyler (Hunter Doohan), and Principal Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie). Trouble starts when a mysterious monster starts murdering Wednesday’s classmates—and she decides to investigate.

This creature is ultimately unmasked as the Hyde, a rare-but-powerful type of outcast, but Wednesday also discovers that someone always needs to be controlling the creature. The season 1 finale ended with Enid (embracing her Werewolf form) putting an end to the violence by stopping Tyler—who turned out to be the Hyde. It’s also revealed that a teacher named Ms. Thornhill is actually Laurel Gates, played by Christina Ricci, and she used the deaths as an attempt to bring her murderous ancestor Joseph Crackstone back to life.

Unfortunately, Tyler killed his therapist, Dr. Kinbott (Riki Lindhome), and Laurel killed Principal Weems. “Hopefully Weems’s death at the end of the season will take people by surprise and they’ll be as moved as Wednesday is by her loss,” Christie said about her character’s untimely demise.

Although the students defeated Joseph, it’s unknown whether Laurel survived, which leaves the door open for Ricci to potentially return. The final episode showed Xavier giving Wednesday a cell phone, only for her to get cryptic texts from a mysterious stalker.

This time around, the season 2 trailer showed Wednesday being heralded for saving the school. Suddenly, everyone wants her autograph and she’s the center of attention (which, of course, she obviously will hate). She’s also struggling with premonitions of Enid’s death, which is shown to be her fault. Morticia wants to help her daughter navigate the same visions she seemingly had.

There’s also a masked villain, and Tyler just might be back as the Hyde. One thing is for sure: Wednesday will be at the center of the action, and she just might be able to stop it again. “Not all loose ends have been tied up neatly as she thinks they have,” the series co-creator Miles Millar said at Netflix’s Tudum event.

“We’re definitely expanding on the supernatural world,” Ortega told Vanity Fair in February 2024. “Our show had all sorts of werewolves and vampires… and I think we expand on that a little bit.” She also shared at Tudum that the season starts off with “Wednesday being kidnapped” and “Tyler in a psych ward.”

Ortega, Zeta-Jones, Guzmán, Myers, Doohan, Joy Sunday (who plays Bianca Barclay), and Fred Armisen (who plays Uncle Fester) will all be returning. Percy Hynes White, who played Xavier Thorpe in season 1, will not be. The actor faced sexual assault allegations, which he denied, which may or may not have figured into the direction the show took away from his character.

Given the popularity of the show, there are also some new faces. Lady Gaga is joining for a cameo, according to Variety. Steve Buscemi will be playing Nevermore Academy’s new principal, Barry Dort. Thandiwe Newton, Billie Piper, Evie Templeton, Owen Painter, Noah Taylor, Joanna Lumley, Christopher Lloyd, Frances O’Connor, Haley Joel Osment, Heather Matarazzo, and Joonas Suotamo are also set to appear this season.
