Alright, Bat-fans — gear up because the Batcave lights are flickering back to life! Warner Bros. just dropped the thrilling news that Matt Reeves’s highly anticipated The Batman Part II is set to start filming this spring. Now, I gotta ask: can a sequel live up to the gritty, shadow-heavy world we’ve come to love, especially when the mastermind James Gunn already raved about the script? Two years might feel like an eternity to wait, but maybe it’s exactly what Gotham needs to get darker, deeper, and more personal. Plus, with Robert Pattinson reprising the role and Colin Farrell’s enigmatic Oz Cobb possibly waddling back to the screen, the stakes are sky-high. So, is Batman saving Gotham — or is Gotham saving Batman? Buckle up, because this isn’t just another superhero flick. It’s a dive into the raw, messy soul of a man in a bat suit, battling a world that’s just as divided as ours. Ready to find out what’s lurking in the shadows next? LEARN MORE

Good news, Bat-fans. According to Deadline, Warner Bros. confirmed this morning that Matt Reeves‘s The Batman Part II will begin filming this spring. New DCU head James Gunn previously stated that he loved the script earlier this summer, but very little known is actually known about the sequel’s plot so far. Hopefully, Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb still waddles out on screen to face Battinson.

The Batman Part II is due out in theaters on October 1, 2027, with Robert Pattinson set to return as Bruce Wayne. The film was originally supposed to release this October, but delays pushed production back two (!) years. The shift will likely affect any plans for The Penguin season 2 as well, especially since the two foes will not meet until 2027 now.

This past September, Reeves shared a bit about how he’s wrestling with the question “Is Batman even a good person?” Everyone has their own idea of what he represents. He’s either a vigilante, the world’s greatest detective, or a traumatized orphan who runs around Gotham dressed like a bat. For Reeves, Batman is resoundingly a force for good.

“The thing that I always think about is how Batman is not just trying to do something for the greater good,” Reeves told Esquire. “It’s the only way he can make sense of his own life. In a way, it’s saving him.”

What Will Happen in The Batman Part II?

There’s no word yet on the story for The Batman Part II, but Reeves teases that Paul Dano’s QAnon Riddler from the first film is just the first domino to fall when it comes to real-world politics seeping into the city of Gotham. “I was very conscious about wanting to make the Gotham of The Batman a Gotham that was our world” Reeves said. So one of his major inspirations for The Batman Part II is “the intense division” of our current political climate.

“On the one hand, you say it’s a thing going on in the United States—and obviously Gotham is an American city—but really it’s worldwide,” Reeves explained. “There’s just tremendous division. The way that the world gets its information, its news. Everybody is in their own silo. That sense of the environment of today, where it’s just very easy for people to be completely separate and at complete odds. That’s definitely one of the things that we’re looking at in Gotham. Some of that is just the way that society is, but some of that is intentional—and to the degree that that’s intentional, and how that fits into the larger picture of what the motivations behind that might be, that’s one of the things that we we’re exploring as well.”

One of Batman’s most famous foes may have a hand in these themes. Fans are undoubtedly very excited for Barry Keoghan’s Joker to show up once again, especially after The Batman’s final moments teased his take on the character. At the same time, it’s possible that Reeves is saving the character for a potential trilogy-ending blockbuster finale. Until then, we’ll remain on the edge of our seats.
