As Love Story, the Ryan Murphy series, continues to inspire TikTok trends, influence today’s fashion and reinvigorate an era that captured everyone’s attention, it’s likely your obsession with John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy has returned. The iconic ’90s couple drew so much attention at the time, thanks to Kennedy’s familial connection to the former president and Bessette’s fashion background.

While Kennedy spent the entirety of his life in front of cameras, Bessette’s life was lived largely in private, so their union garnered tons of media attention. Their relationship, which was passionate and, at times, rocky, was a private one, despite the world’s fascination with them. The couple was widely considered the Prince Charles and Princess Diana of America, referencing the royal couple’s prominent status and unlikely pairing.
Kennedy and Bessette first met in 1992 but despite hitting it off, they didn’t begin dating until a couple of years later. In fact, Kennedy was still in a relationship with actress Daryl Hannah at the time, who he’d been seeing on-and-off since 1988.
Kennedy and Bessette begin dating

In 1994, Kennedy and Bessette began dating, not long after the passing of his mother, Jackie Kennedy Onassis. By the following year, he proposed to her while on a fishing boat during a 4th of July trip to Martha’s Vineyard. He presented a diamond and sapphire band, which he had custom-designed. It was also inspired by his mother’s swimming ring, which she wore for swimming and other daily activities to avoid losing or ruining her more valuable one.
Although she didn’t give him an answer for nearly a month, Bessette eventually said yes. However, not long after they decided to marry, the two took part in an infamous screaming match in the middle of Central Park, which became front-page news. Kennedy later called the fight “a silly argument” during an interview on The Howard Stern Show.

Following that fight, the couple finally tied the knot in a secret wedding in 1996. They exchanged vows during a candlelit ceremony in a small church on Cumberland Island, just off the coast of Georgia. The ceremony was only attended by about 40 guests, highly unusual for a member of the Kennedy family.
The couple tie the knot

The couple was married for just under three years, with several reports claiming they had a turbulent relationship, though much of the strain had to do with the intense public scrutiny they faced. Bessette had to come to terms with living not only a public life but one as a new member of the Kennedy family.
Kennedy occasionally spoke to the press, which was a norm for him, but Bessette chose to approach her marriage differently. The Calvin Klein publicist famously gave no official interviews, leaving very little audio of her voice behind. Bessette was very quiet when it came to interacting with the press and she became known for it.

Unfortunately, on July 16, 1999, Kennedy, Bessette and her sister Lauren were killed in a plane crash while on the way to a family wedding in Martha’s Vineyard. Kennedy was piloting the plane from Fairfield, New Jersey and although he had experience as a pilot, the conditions and weather led to a loss of control.
Their tragic ending came far too early in their lives, as John F. Kennedy Jr. was just 38 years old and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy was 33 years old.
Tune into the final episodes of Love Story to see how their story closes on Thursdays at 9 PM on FX or stream on Hulu at 12 AM Fridays.
