Why Bari Weiss Running CBS News Could Be the Biggest Mistake You’ve Never Seen Coming

Remember that stirring feeling you get watching Good Night, and Good Luck—that raw, fearless journalistic courage that made you believe in the power of the free press? Well, hold onto that nostalgia, because the real-life drama unfolding at CBS News isn’t exactly channeling Ed Murrow’s spirit. Instead, Hollywood isn’t stepping in either—George Clooney and David Strathairn won’t be rescuing us this time. The news? Bari Weiss, a figure as controversial as she is unproven in newsroom leadership, is slated to take the helm of CBS News, backed by a $150 million deal from Paramount Skydance. Now, here’s the kicker: does hiring someone whose main claim to fame is railing against “cancel culture” signal a new dawn or just another remix of old conflicts, hijacked by tech-billionaires who seem as out of touch with journalism as you or I would be piloting Artemis III to the moon? It begs the question—when the “Tiffany Network” starts feeling more like a dollar store, what does that say about the future of trusted news? Buckle up, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride. LEARN MORE

Good Night, and Good Luck was a fine movie. (The stage play was eh.) But, alas, Ed Murrow and Fred Friendly aren’t walking through the door, people. Neither, in fact, are George Clooney and David Strathairn. CBS News is not going to rescue us. From The Washington Post:

Paramount Skydance is expected to announce Monday that it will pay $150 million in cash and stock for the Free Press and name [Bari] Weiss to CBS News’ top editorial job, said one of the people, both of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the plans before they are formally announced. The move heralds a new era at the 98-year-old broadcast network, whose corporate parents made moves to address the Trump administration’s allegations of liberal bias as they sought approval for an $8 billion merger that was finalized in August. The appointment of Weiss, a staunch advocate of Israel and frequent critic of the mainstream media, to lead the company’s news operation follows its hiring last month of a conservative-leaning ombudsman to field complaints about the network’s editorial coverage.

Based on her résumé, Weiss isn’t any more qualified to run a major news organization than she is to fly Artemis III to the moon. Now, within the universe of wing-nut welfare, to which Weiss fled after departing The New York Times in a huff, one can rise simply on the strength of your superior bullshit. Weiss’s main riff was the “cancel culture” con. Which proved to be positively catnip for the money power, so she landed softly at her own joint, the Free Press.

Now, though, it appears that the elite legacy media has adopted that same philosophy—or it is being dragged into it by a bunch of tech-bro gazillionaires who don’t know any more about actual journalism than she does. In this case, it’s David Ellison, son of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, the second-richest man in the world and an old pal of the current president, whom Ellison could buy and sell three times over. And if you’re willing to hire a conservative affirmative-action monitor for your newsroom, handing the wheel to an unconvincing ideological chameleon isn’t exactly a leap.

Thus does the Tiffany Network turn into the Dollar Store.
