A 37-year-old sweater returns in 2025 with a fresh twist. J.Crew’s Rollneck sweater was first designed in 1988 and has been a consistent bestseller for the American fashion brand. This fall, it’s available in new colors and a slightly updated silhouette—a little boxier, wider, and shorter.

For its new campaign celebrating the sweater, J.Crew enlisted a diverse cast of creatives, each with a distinct sense of style, including Maggie Rogers, Molly Gordon, Lukita Maxwell, and Taylour Paige-Angulo. Between them, they showcase the multitude of ways you can wear a Rollneck. “We thought about the cast almost like a John Hughes movie, sort of like The Breakfast Club, very Americana, but everybody has their own personality, their own sense of style,” explains Olympia Gayot, creative director and head of women’s designs at J.Crew.

Part of the Rollneck’s enduring appeal is its simplicity. It has a vintage look and feel, reminiscent of the ’90s, minimalism, and classic American fashion. Musical artist Maggie Rogers notes, “It reminds me of being at summer camp in Maine and being with my friends in the fall upstate. There’s really no wrong way to style it, but I’ll be wearing mine over a white T-shirt or button-down with my classic gold hoops.”

It’s the kind of sweater you can wear and rewear from adolescence into adulthood and pass on to the next generation, which is a key principle for the brand. “A core memory for me is stealing my dad’s J.Crew button-downs and wearing them as dresses,” shares actress Molly Gordon. “I’ve always thought of J.Crew as the place to go to get the wardrobe staples that you’ll have for your whole life.”

Now you can shop the Rollneck in 27 different colors, from ruby red, navy, and brown to rugby stripes. The beauty of the sweater lies in its versatility; it’s comfortable to wear and easy to style, no matter your age. Take, for example, Martha Stewart and Ella Emhoff, who were both seen wearing the Rollneck at J.Crew’s recent New York Fashion Week party.

“I feel like customers and women in general in America are really flexing their style muscle,” shares Gayot. “They know how to get dressed, they know how to make things look interesting, and everybody takes it in their own direction. And that’s what’s cool about these pieces: They’re versatile because people can interpret them in their own way.”
