The Birkenstock Arizona Sandals are a stylish classic with a blend of suede, leather, cork, and EVA foam for everyday wear, but I’m here to tell you they’re also a game-changer post-workout. I’m constantly seeing them on runners’ feet in New York City (I know when I spot a runner), and I understand why.

Like the Salomon RX Slide 3.0, the cork molds to my feet with each step, creating a cradling sensation. The only difference I noticed is that it took a couple of weeks for the insoles to conform to my feet, and Men’s Health style and commerce editor Joseph Cheatham agrees. “The contoured cork-latex footbed starts off a bit firm yet not super uncomfortable, but after a week or two, the sandal starts to conform to the shape of my feet in a way that feels incredibly natural underfoot,” he says. For context, a contouring footbed provides personalized support that mimics custom orthotics.

Speaking of the footbed, it has a unique structure for optimal arch support. Raised sides encourage stability, the middle is raised for proper walking alignment, and a toe bar helps you grip the insole. As someone with high arches, it felt pleasant after a long day of walking, to say the least. It’s specifically beneficial for flat feet and overpronation, though, which Cheatham has. “I’ve taken these on long days exploring cities (hours on cobblestone in Spain) and found the arch support kept my feet in a neutral alignment, which made a huge difference in how my body felt after,” he says.

The toe box is insanely spacious, dare I say too spacious. Luckily, the straps have rustic adjustable buckles for a custom fit. Besides width, these run very big—I recommend going down one full size so your feet don’t slide around. As for traction, the cork is lined with an EVA foam outsole with curvy grooves. It’s great for pavement and sand, but I’d certainly avoid rocks and other terrain.
