Feliz cumpleaños, Benito! It’s Bad Bunny’s birthday, and he’s celebrating the occasion with gifts—for us. Today we get a closer look at the new beige-and-black colorway of his signature BadBo 1.0 sneaker and a sneak peek of a full BadBo apparel collection, a first in his five-year partnership with Adidas. And though it isn’t available to purchase quite yet, Adidas confirms that it will be later this month.
Like Benito himself, the story of the BadBo 1.0 it starts with Puerto Rico. It was originally teased back in early August at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico as part The Archive: Puerto Rico Para El Mundo exhibition, which showcased 146 shoes joining Adidas’s expanding archive and its growing partnership with Bad Bunny. But attendees only got a tiny, blurry glimpse of the low-tops along with a placard announcing the name.
The first release—limited to 1,994 pairs, commemorating the year he was born—came the morning after his Grammy win for Album of the Year. The second iteration, clad all in white, landed the day after his culture-rattling Super Bowl performance. And now, on his 32nd birthday, we see the BadBo universe expanding with a collection of easygoing sportswear designed to complement the signature sneaker.
The BadBo apparel lineup isn’t overcomplicated. A chilled-out palette of gray and pale yellow complements the upcoming sneaker, while the silhouette—cropped and boxy up top, with barrel-leg trousers offering volume and shape on the bottom—does most of the work. Branding is minimal; think three-stripes details and the occasional hit of text reading “Adidas Para Bad Bunny.” But there are still a few surprises to be found, our favorite of which is the removable hood that can be worn as a sort of standalone balaclava or paired with a sweatshirt.
Like its predecessors, the sneaker itself takes advantage of elevated materials, blending premium nubuck and hairy suede to add dimension the neutral tones, like a beige so light it matches the cloudy nuttiness of a pitorro de coco. There’s a lone star on the heel, a nod to the Puerto Rican flag. The star symbolizes the island and traces its lineage to the Grito de Lares flag—Puerto Rico’s first—on which the white star stood for liberty. The history lesson continues as the sky-blue stitching evokes not only the sky and coastal waters, but the original blue shade of the Puerto Rican flag adopted by pro-independence members in 1895.
As with all things Bad Bunny, these upcoming releases are rooted in a place and a personality but still manage to feel universal. It’s proof that good style can be celebrated anywhere—and in any language.
