Why Sean McAvinue’s ‘Out of Office’ Mindset Is the Secret Weapon Powering Ergo’s AI Breakthroughs—And What It Means for Your Next Move
Ever wondered what a day packed with tech, dogs, and a dash of AI-driven honeymoon planning looks like? Sean McAvinue’s Saturday is a masterclass in blending the hustle of a tech maven with the warmth of everyday family moments—and yes, it involves a couple of lurchers who clearly believe the couch is their throne, not yours. From sipping that sacred morning coffee while catching up on the latest in AI and tech, to winding down the day by digitally fine-tuning travel plans for a honeymoon postponed but not forgotten, Sean’s approach is as real as it gets. Oh, and did I mention how AI isn’t just a work tool but a travel agent too? Trust me, this isn’t your average day-in-the-life story—it’s a glimpse into how innovation sneaks into the fabric of personal life, making every moment, well… a little smarter.

“The last important task of the day is to update our honeymoon plans. I generated an itinerary with AI” – Sean McAvinue, Ergo
6am I get up and head straight to the kitchen for my morning coffee.
While I wait, I ask Alexa for a rundown of my daily news briefing. There’s always something to catch up on in the tech world.
A couple of things in the briefing catch my attention, so I kick off an AI research plan to take a deeper dive. The nice thing about this is I can get the results in the form of an audio podcast.
7am Once coffee is done and I’m ready to go, I head out for a run with the two dogs, Khal and Nymeria. They are lurchers, so when I say “run”, I’m running, they are walking briskly beside me.
I listen to the podcast I generated while warming up and then switch up to some music for the rest of the run. For the walk home I switch back to some AI news-focused podcasts.
8.30am We get home once the dogs are satisfied that they have sufficiently sniffed everything along the route and my wife prepares their breakfast while I take a shower.
We eat breakfast and I grab my laptop.
I contribute to a number of tech websites and blogs, so I’m always tinkering with some demo or project and today is no different.
I find it hard to write technical content without testing out the concepts myself, so I spend the next hour or so building out demos and writing articles. I don’t like to use AI to generate content when I’m writing, but it is fantastic to help plan and review content.
Asking Copilot to review the tone and ensure the article stays on point is a great way to speed up the review process and catch things I may have missed.
11am My wife and I bring the dogsout for a walk and stop for a coffee along the way.
She’s a coffee purist so will only have black, possibly with some milk. Usually I would be the same, but on Saturdays I treat myself to whatever speciality flavoured coffee is on offer, which I suspect may closer resemble a dessert.
12:30pm When we get back, we divide up the tasks for cleaning the house while the dogs sleep off their eventful morning.
I’m a big music fan so when the house is clean, I spend a bit of time playing the new mandolin I got for Christmas. I’m sure if you ask my wife she wouldn’t exactly call it playing, but I never said I was very good…
2.30pm On Saturdays we have an early dinner with my wife’s parents, so we pack up the dogs into the car and head over to their house.
Dinner is always amazing, but the real highlight is dessert — homemade cheesecake. We stay around for a while chatting before heading off.
5pm We stop off in my brother’s house on the way home to see my niece and nephews.
A quick visit turns into a longer stay when my youngest nephew decides it’s critical that my wife helps him to build a new car racetrack we got him for Christmas.
My brother and I work together, so while this is going on the conversation turns to shop talk. We hit the road again and stop to pick up some wine for the evening along the way.
7.30pm The last important task of the day is to update our honeymoon plans. We got married late last year and decided to postpone going away to give us more time to plan.
I generated an itinerary with AI for the trip over Christmas, so we spend some time going over the plan and checking out the hotel recommendations and travel times making sure we have all the important pieces booked.
9pm With everything done, we pour a glass of wine and sit down to watch a movie.
The thing they don’t tell you when you adopt lurchers is that you will never get a comfortable seat onthe couch without an elbow or nose in your face.
Midnight It’s time for bed. We have an early start in the morning (I have somehow agreed to go shopping on a Sunday), so I spend about 15 minutes listening to an audiobook before turning it off and turning in for the night.
