Irish cinemas are expecting one of their busiest weekends ever as National Cinema Day becomes National Cinema Weekend.

This Saturday and Sunday (5-6 September), participating cinemas will offer tickets at a recommended price of €4.

National Cinema Day has proven to be a very successful initiative, attracting over 200,000 admissions in previous years, and admissions this weekend are predicted to exceed 350,000.

Approximately 99% of cinemas in the Republic will take part in the campaign, which is backed by Fis Éireann/Screen Ireland, with cinemas in every county participating.

Cinemagoers across National Cinema Weekend will also be able to benefit from additional screenings catering to diverse audiences, including sensory screenings along with additional subtitled and captioned screenings at various cinemas.

National Cinema Weekend takes place following a strong summer for the cinemas buoyed by the popularity of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey.

According to the International Union of Cinemas, Ireland had 3.3 cinema admissions per capita in 2019, the highest level of cinema attendance in Europe.

Ireland also has the highest screen density per capita of any European country, with one cinema screen per 10,000 people.

“Screen Ireland is proud to support National Cinema Weekend, which is set to be a fantastic celebration of cinema, in recognition of Irish audiences and their continued support for Irish film on the big screen,” said Désirée Finnegan, chief executive of Fis Éireann/Screen Ireland.

“With such a wide range of films available to choose from as part of the initiative, we hope audiences across the country can find new Irish stories to connect with this year.”

New and recent releases will screen across the weekend including The Incomer starring Domhnall Gleeson; special preview screenings of Bad Apples starring Saoirse Ronan; The Death of Robin Hood starring Hugh Jackman; Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars; Insidious: Out of the Further; Coyote vs. Acme and I Want Your Sex starring Olivia Wilde.

Some of the movies showing include Irish titles such as new music documentary Celtic Utopia and limited preview screenings of the acclaimed Everybody Digs Bill Evans, filmed in West Cork. Also screening will be Irish titles The Quiet Girl/An Cailín Ciúin; Báite; and Gar O’Rourke’s acclaimed Ukrainian documentary Sanatorium, with a selection of other Irish films also returning to cinemas.

Popular re-releases will also screen across the weekend including The Lobster; Terminator 2: Judgment Day; Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home; animated favourite Cars and The Hunger Games saga.

Alex Murphy and Chris Walley, stars of The Young Offenders, which will celebrate its ten year anniversary with a re-release of the film on National Cinema Weekend, said: “We think there’s nothing like the magic of going to the movies.
