Inside the Unbreakable Bond: How ‘All Creatures’ Stars Rachel Shenton & Anna Madeley Built a Friendship That Defies Hollywood’s Toughest Challenges
Isn’t it fascinating how some on-screen connections manage to leap off the screen and bloom into genuine friendships? Take All Creatures Great and Small, for instance—a series brimming with cosy charm and tender moments that pull at your heartstrings. It’s not just the veterinary antics of James Herriot in the idyllic Yorkshire Dales or those classic romances that keep us hooked; there’s a deeper thread woven through the show: the evolving friendships, especially between Helen, the farmer’s daughter, and Mrs. Hall, the steadfast housekeeper. What’s truly heartwarming, though, is learning that Rachel Shenton and Anna Madeley—who play these beloved characters—share a real-life bond just as sweet. I mean, who else would wander up the road lugging a microwave just to help a new mom sterilize baby bottles? It’s friendships like these that remind me: the best connections happen when you show up for someone, no matter what. All Creatures Great and Small is a series full of cozy charm and heartwarming relationships, so it isn’t much of a surprise that some of them have translated off-screen as well. The PBS Masterpiece series follows James Herriot, a veterinary surgeon who makes his home in the scenic Yorkshire Dales. Upon his arrival, he begins working at Skeldale House, where he treats and cares for animals alongside the eccentric Siegfried Farnon and his brother Tristan Farnon. Along the way, he forms bonds with Mrs. Hall, the housekeeper at Skeldale House, as well as the lovely Helen, a farmer’s daughter who steals his heart. While we love the romance at the heart of this show, the strong female friendships keep us coming back as well, and while Helen and Mrs. Hall share a lovely bond on screen, off screen, their portrayers, Rachel Shenton and Anna Madeley, do as well. Here, read all about their sweet friendship.

Anna Madeley and Rachel Shenton are friends IRL
Over the course of the show, we’ve seen Mrs. Hall and Helen’s relationship evolve quite a bit, the duo leaning on one another and sharing advice throughout the series—and when the cameras aren’t rolling, the relationships between Anna Madeley, who portrays Mrs. Hall, and Rachel Shenton, who plays Helen, is quite similar.
Shenton filmed Season 6 while pregnant with her baby boy, and proceeded to film the Christmas special not long after giving birth. In a post she shared to Instagram celebrating the wrap of Season 6, she shouted out those who made it possible, with a special nod to Madeley. The actress elaborated on Anna Madeley’s help and comfort during this time in conversation with Masterpiece, saying, “I’m indebted to Anna Madeley in many ways. We’ve become very good friends and I love her dearly. When I returned after having my baby…Well, it’s bizarre afterwards, because it’s such a heady experience and sort of bigger than I ever could have imagined, the level of love that was suddenly activated and the level of vulnerability—I know fears about things that I didn’t even know about, all this stuff,” she shared.
“I think he was only three months old when I went back, so still very much in that newborn stage. And Anna had been there and done it—when we first started shooting in Season 1, her little boy was 10 months old, so she’d very much knew what I was feeling.”
Rachel went on to share a story in which she realized the apartment she was staying in didn’t have a microwave for sterilizing baby bottles. She gave Madeley a call, who revealed she had a microwave in her apartment. Before Rachel could do anything, she looked out the window to find Anna walking up the road, microwave in tow—a sweet gesture that meant everything to this new mom!

Rachel Shenton and Anna Madeley work together again in ‘Gladstone Girls’
Rachel Shenton and Anna Madeley have also worked together on the scripted podcast series Gladstone Girls, which tells the story of a group of female pottery workers in the 70s who stand up to protect one of their traditions of turning their workroom in the factory into a hair salon on Friday evenings. In February 2027, Gladstone Girls will be brought to life on stage, and you can see it between February 6 and 27 at the New Vic Theater. Visit their site for more information.
The friendship between Rachel Shenton and Anna Madeley is a beautiful reminder that the best relationships are built on showing up for one another—whether that means walking up the road with a microwave in hand or simply being present during life’s most vulnerable moments. As fans of All Creatures Great and Small, we’re blessed to witness not only the heartwarming bonds on screen but also the genuine love and support these actresses share in real life.
