Chloé Zhao’s Cannes Look Is a Bold Fashion Statement You Didn’t See Coming—Here’s Why It’s Breaking All the Rules!
Ever wonder what a blowfish and high fashion have in common? Yeah, it sounds kinda wild but stick with me. Just like that blowfish swells up to double its size when it feels threatened — gulping down water like it’s the last drink on Earth — we humans have our own way of puffing up, but with threads instead of water. Whether it’s layering up to fend off winter’s chill, throwing on that power suit to conquer the 9-to-5 grind, or picking a jaw-dropping gown for a big night, fashion is our armor. At the Cannes Film Festival, Chloé Zhao embodied this transformation perfectly, stepping out in a surreal gown inspired by the very creature that knows how to make a statement when it counts. It’s a reminder that sometimes, looking powerful is just as much about how you dress as it is what you feel. Curious to see how this underwater defense mechanism inspired runway magic? Dive in. In the ocean, blowfish puff up as a means of protection, defending themselves against predators when they feel unsafe or threatened. The process involves swallowing a large volume of water, which in turn inflates their stomachs to over double the standard size. In fashion, the act of changing form for self-preservation, whether physical or figurative, is a bit simpler: layering for the winter’s cold, suiting up for the office, picking a new dress for a big night. But the concept is nevertheless the same.
At Cannes Film Festival, Chloé Zhao walked the red carpet in a surrealist two-piece gown that drew inspiration from the powerful, transformative sea creature. Designed by Daniel Roseberry for his Spring 2026 Couture collection for Schiaparelli, the set was daring and eye-catching, with black splotches and crystal embellishments dotting a sheer nude jacket and matching midi skirt.
Black organza spikes emerged from the top’s sharp shoulders, giving an entirely new meaning to power suiting, and a gravity-defying peplum finished off the otherworldly feel that the house is known for.
Zhao kept her hair out of her face (and spikes!) with a slicked-back updo. She went for classic glam, with black eyeliner, rosy blush, and some shiny gloss on her lips. For shoes, she wore sculptural pointed-toe heels in black to match.
Earlier in the day, the Hamnet director looked just as cool in a slouchy, fuzzy Bottega Veneta set from the label’s Fall 2026 collection. She wore the yellow-and-white look to a dinner hosted by Cannes’s official sponsor, jewelry and timepiece house Chopard.
