Today, at one of the old Barneys store locations in New York, Rachel Scott delivered her sophomore collection for Proenza Schouler. Her first showing, this past February, was restrained, teasing out the essence of the brand via sharp tailoring and sculptural silhouettes. “This season,” Scott explained backstage, “now that I’ve laid that foundation, I was really thinking about the New York woman and how she moves through the city and through her life.” And what every New York woman really needs to move through the city is a great, giant, catch-all bag. (Re)Enter the new PS1 bag, the PS1 Walker.

Proenza Schouler first launched the PS1 in 2008 under the direction of founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. The name references New York City’s public school system, messenger bags, and, of course, the brand’s own initials. The PS1 has a schoolbag feel but with the structure of a briefcase (albeit one that’s been tossed around a lot), including a flip lock and buckle detailing on the facade. In the midst of the early 2000s’ logo mania, the PS1, with no obvious branding, emerged as a sort of anti-It bag and, was worn by It girls like Mary-Kate Olsen and Chloë Sevigny.

Today’s PS1 Walker, a reference to the house’s original studio address on Walker Street, relaxes a bit in silhouette, swapping a top handle for a soft shoulder strap and sharp edges for soft curves. But it retains the general shape, embellishments, and essence of its predecessor. It is the work of three-time CFDA accessory designer of the year, Reed Krakoff, who most recently had a hand in the launch of Gap’s first bag collection. “Reed instinctively knew what to leave alone, which mattered far more to me than reinventing it all,” said Scott. The bag comes in mini, medium, and large, and in an array of colors and finishes including butter yellow leather, brown patent, camel suede, and more.

Elsewhere on the runway, Scott’s Spring 2027 collection for Proenza Schouler delivered hit after hit. The boundaries between formal and casual wear dissolved; Scott paired slinky, asymmetrically draped gowns with flat sandals and rendered sharp suiting in shockingly hued velvets. All-over zebra prints and embellishments that made noise as the models walked conveyed a touch of wildness.

The launch of the PS Walker coincides with Scott’s vision for Proenza Schouler really coming into focus. “Rachel is bringing her own perspective into dialogue with this house’s legacy, and the bag posed the same question,” adds Krakoff, “what to celebrate from the original, and what needed to evolve. The result is softer, sleeker, more refined, and unmistakably the PS1.” A handbag is a key component of a mature fashion label, particularly from a business sense. And it seems Scott is building something with both sophisticated design and sales potential—the best of both worlds.
