University College Dublin has awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree to Irish businessman Donal Tierney in recognition of his contributions to veterinary science, sustainable development and higher education.
The honour was conferred during a ceremony at UCD’s O’Reilly Hall on Monday, recognising Tierney’s impact across business, research and philanthropy.
A graduate of UCD with a BA in Economics and an MBA from the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, Tierney is best known for his leadership of animal health company Bimeda, which has grown from an Irish-founded business into a global veterinary pharmaceuticals company operating in more than 80 countries.
Beyond his role in animal health, Tierney has been involved in advancing renewable energy and sustainability initiatives through Green Biofuels Ireland and as chair of NTR plc.
He has also been a longstanding supporter of research and education, including the establishment of the UCD Bimeda Herd Health Hub at AgTechUCD.
Delivering the official citation, Professor Grace Mulcahy of the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine said Tierney’s commitment to the agri-tech sector had helped strengthen Ireland’s international reputation in the field.
“Donal has always believed that Ireland has a competitive advantage in the global agri-tech sector and wanted his company to play a leading role in facilitating its further development and international standing,” she said.
Mulcahy said the UCD Bimeda Herd Health Hub had made a significant contribution to both teaching and research within the university.
“At school level, the hub has transformed the manner in which we are able to educate our veterinary students and undertake impactful clinical research,” she added.
Tierney has also played a prominent role in Ireland’s innovation ecosystem through his involvement with the Industry Research & Development Group (IRDG), where he has supported research-intensive companies through mentoring, collaboration and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
His commitment to social and economic development extends internationally through his work with Traidlinks, an organisation focused on promoting enterprise development in East Africa and strengthening trade links between the region and Europe.
The honorary doctorate is among UCD’s highest distinctions and is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions in their fields and to society more broadly.
