I think if you read some of my meal prep articles, you would realize that I kind of eat a pretty standardize food.
To some of my co-workers, or readers, this may feel a torture.
Some felt that I am doing this to cut cost (not 100% wrong).
But I am going to share a little of my own perspectives.
Years ago, when I was still working for my old company I came across some advice over podcast that we should chew our food well if you want proper digestion and nutrient absorption. So to do that, you may need to chew your food like 20 times.
In the hopes of making my skin condition better I decide to try that.
We would usually lunch at somewhere close by, just the normal Cai Png, or Roast meat those sort of things.
I think the first time I did it, I realize it was pretty magical.
I tried to close my eyes and just munch or chew the food 20 times. Firstly, I was slow as fxxk. My colleagues end up waiting for me until a certain point I just told them if they are ready to leave, we just leave.
Secondly, if you close your eyes and munch, you can really feel the taste and texture of the food. Food in itself is like a chemical reaction and doing that would really make you feel the food itself.
Because of that I learn to enjoy my food.
We are often so distracted during meal times.
- Talking to colleagues.
- Rushing through work.
- Thinking about work stuff.
- Thinking about our investments.
- Thinking about our children stuff
- Thinking about parents.
All of these things take away from connecting with your food.
The danger is this: The food (not the only) that will make you really taste well is if it is season richly with a lot of seasoning.
If not how do you feel the difference if you are so distracted?
I am okay to eat the same thing again and again mainly because I feel the food I prepare very simply is just as tasty to me than the food outside. If my food sucks to me, do you think I can continue to eat it so often?
In a way, my meal prep is also a journey of perfecting food that triangulates between:
- Tasty.
- Lightest seasoning.
- Easiest to prepare.
I basically take portfolio construction into food lol.
Since figuring out being very active when eating so early in life, I kind of know a lot of feeling happy with food is really about attention and what I am left with is the 3 above. It isn’t easy as you get on with age. My teeth is not the best now.
Recently, our Chairman and CEO Christopher Tan is on a wellness trajectory and got us to attend a 2 day nutrition talk. I think 85% of what was shared by the lady who conducted the talk (Natalie Loo) was not new to me.
She also mention this chewing your food properly but I think many just feels that this is impossible. it will be so slow.
I think active eating in this way is my super power but it is your superpower as well.
For sure, you cannot do it every time. I also don’t do it every time. But there is a sweet spot.
At the start of every of your meal, perhaps close your eyes and chew the first spoonful 20 times.
If the food really taste nice, that sets your mood up for a good meal.
Then you can be conscious about it as you chat with your colleagues and friend, but take time to go into this “food meditation space” to connect with your food again.
If you find a way to enjoy the most simple food, it helps your health. It also stops you from hunting or lament what to eat for lunch/dinner. It helps your food budget like me.
