I refuse to believe that I’m the only one who’s feeling it. Maybe it’s a new wave of nostalgia. Maybe they—whoever they are—put something in the water. Most likely, though, it comes down to simple aesthetics. Because vintage-inspired sneakers are having a moment right now, and to my eye, that’s a very good thing.

I just can’t conjure much excitement for techno-futuristic colorways, heat-sealed everything, and silhouettes that look like interpretations of a shoe from an anime that’s set in 2079. What I can get excited about is something that harks back to the good ’79, the one with a 19 in front of it. Give me muted, natural hues. Classic paneling. Maybe a gum sole, if you really want to pull on my heartstrings. It just feels right.

The new Moncler CityTrek.

Which is why I’m happy to report that you can get all of those things from a new sneaker by Moncler. You might know the mountain-born brand best for its exceptional puffer jackets, ski, and winter gear, but in the last few years the lineup has expanded considerably. Now, Moncler is a dependable go-to for your entire wardrobe, at any time of year, whether you’re summiting a peak or showing up to work late because you dipped out for a one-hour coffee on a slow summer morning.

The sneaker in question is called the CityTrek ($650), and you can see Moncler’s outdoor DNA throughout, from the nubby Vibram outsoles to the uppers made of suede, nylon, and Cordura. But even though the look is rooted in throwback trail shoes, the CityTrek is better suited to everyday life on flat ground.

The sneaker is finished with a smooth leather back panel, complete with a hit of Monlcer branding.

Dress them down with shorts and a tee for a day at the park. Dress them up with loose trousers and a lightweight jacket for a relatively casual evening out. Or, hell, wear them for an easy out-and-back. I’m not going to stop you. Though, depending on whether the trail is frequented by eagle-eyed fashion fans, your fellow hikers might, if only to ask, “Hey, what are those shoes you’re wearing?”
