3 min readDeodorant isn’t sexy, but it’s essential. I’ve been using natural deodorant for six years and my current favorite is from Salt & Stone. I’ve used it on and off for two years, and honestly, it’s offically replaced my old standby from Nécessaire. That’s saying a lot since I’m a loyalist and genuinely use at least one Nécessaire daily. Ahem, it’s close to four. Don’t get me wrong—Nécessaire is still a solid deodorant. But, the Salt & Stone offers me slightly stronger odor protection, which is essential during hot subway comutes. I’ve swiped it on for days at the office and gym to outdoor concerts, like the R&B Tour at Met Life stadium. It even kept me stink-free when I spent a few days at the Belmond Cap Juluca in Anguilla for our annual Travel Awards. The odor protection caught my attention, but Salt & Stone’s combination of skin-friendly ingredients, enticing scents, and it’s longevity kept me a fan of this deodorant.

What I Like
Odor Protection
This is one of the best deodorants I’ve used in the last two years. The odor protection is comparable to traditional deodorants even during workouts and un-airconditioned subway rides around New York. It definitely keeps up with sweltering summer weather along the East Coast and Euro vacations with ease. Since I’m not a runner, I can’t vouch for its efficacy there but it quite literally has me covered during vinyasa yoga and mat pilates. This deodorant also holds up surprisingly well on the StairMaster and high incline walks on the treadmill.
Made With Skincare-Quality Ingredients
Dermatologist Kiran Mian, MD, previously called this one of the best natural deodorants because of its impressive ingredients. “It has a blend of probiotics, plant-based extracts, antioxidants, cornstarch for moisture absorption, and soothing ingredients to prevent irritation,” Dr. Mian said. It’s also infused with hyaluronic acid to help hydrate my sensitive underarm skin without feeling damp throughout the day.
No White Cast on Dark Clothes
Despite it’s light color, Salt & Stone deodorant doesn’t leave behind a white cast on my clothing, including my black T-shirts. I’ve previously tested deodorants and antiperspirants that have transferred onto my clothing and even stained my shoulder bags. Those are non-issues with my Salt & Stone natural deodorants.
Salt & Stone Deodorant Smells Like Perfume
The brand nailed it’s array of scents with options for everyone, including the brand new Lily & Yuzu, which combines citrus yuzu notes with airy floral notes. Beyond the newness, here’s my definitive ranking of scents.
Black Rose & Oud: I need my body and home to smell just like this sweet floral scent. Lucky for me the brand makes body washes, candles, and body mists. The deodorant smells a little warmer than the other Black Rose & Oud products in my collection, but it’s totally worth it.
Bergamot & Hinoki: I’m from Florida and love crisp citrus notes. This one combines bergamot, grapefruit, and orange blossom with notes of energizing eucalyptus and hinoki wood for spa-like vibes.
Santal & Vetiver: It’s what I’m wearing right now. A trifecta of vetiver, amber, and sandalwood have an Earthy yet refined touch to my mornings.
Saffron & Cedar: This is the scent that made me curious about saffron perfumes. This aroma is warm and inviting yet a little mysterious thanks to the inclusion of the warm notes.
Neroli & Basil: This scent really surprised me since I don’t care for the smell of basil. Notes of fresh bail are paired with green shiso leaf, eucalptus, and Sicilian orange blossom for an energizing twist.
What I Don’t Like
Salt & Stone shines with its odor protection. However, it’s a natural deodorant, meaning it’s aluminum-free. Aluminum is the key ingredient in anti-perspirant that offers moisture protection. I’ll wear an anti-perspirant during heat waves to avoid damp underarms, but stick to Salt & Stone for my daily wear. TBH, it’s a tradeoff that I’m fine with because the formula is otherwise effective and doesn’t irritate my pits.
TL;DR: Is Salt & Stone Deodorant Worth It?
Salt & Stone is my top deodorant recommendation. The combination of odor control paired with skin-nourishing ingredients, along with enticing perfume-worthy smells solidifies its place in my summer beauty routine and beyond.
