Prince Harry and Meghan’s Surprising U.K. Return: What This Move Means for Their Future and the Royal Family’s Dynamic
Six years ago, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan made one of the boldest moves in recent royal history—stepping back from their senior royal roles and jetting off to sunny California. But guess what? The Sussexes are packing their bags again, and it seems the call of the U.K.’s unpredictable weather and royal roots has pulled them back, at least for a while. Now, I can’t help but wonder—what’s next for this globe-trotting family, and will the kids trade coconut trees for castles? Their return is stirring quite the buzz, especially with school plans in the works and their new British digs still a mystery. This isn’t just a move; it’s a strategic play on the royal chessboard, and I’m here for every twist. Ready to dive deeper into the Sussexes’ next chapter? LEARN MORE.
Six years after Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan stepped down from their senior positions as royals and moved their family across the world to Montecito, California, they are moving back to the United Kingdom, at least temporarily.
In a new report, People alleges that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are relocating to Britain for an extended period of time, beginning later this month. While it is unclear how long the couple plans to live across the pond, the outlet also states that the couple’s two children—Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5—will begin school in the U.K. this fall. The location of the family’s new residence is still under wraps.
This move will not change Meghan and Harry’s status as non-working royals.
Meghan and Harry first moved to California in July 2020, mere months after announcing that they would be cutting back their royal duties. Their home base became Montecito, where their neighbors included A-listers like Oprah Winfrey, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Ariana Grande.
According to People, the Sussexes will continue to own their home in California, as well as their private vacation property in Portugal. Their new English residence will not be royally-owned.
Meghan and Harry’s last U.K. home base was Frogmore Cottage, which was bequeathed to them by Queen Elizabeth II in 2019. However, after moving to California, their license to occupy the home was not re-extended, and in 2023, they were asked to vacate the property. Then, it was offered to King Charles III’s disgraced younger brother Prince Andrew.
This news comes only a few weeks after the Sussexes paid a private visit to see Charles and Queen Camilla, marking the first time the Sussex kids had seen their grandfather in four years.
The king is currently undergoing treatment for a form of cancer—a treatment that has been scaled back since he was diagnosed in early 2024.
Per People, the king learned of the couple’s intentions to move to the U.K. just this past weekend, and he “welcomes the opportunity to see more of the Sussex family in a private and personal capacity.”
