Anne Hathaway is heading back to Genovia! Taking the stage at D23’s Disney fan event on August 14, the Princess Diaries star shared an update on the long-awaited threequel to the “beloved” early-aughts movie series that “started it all” for her.
For the appearance, the actor worked with stylist Erin Walsh on yet another show-stopping maternity look, built around a plissé top from Ukraine-based prêt-à-pleats label J’amemme. Hand-crafted as part of a two-piece set, the burgundy style featured lightweight pleating, sculptural rosette ruffles, and a dramatic high-low hem. Hathaway swapped the matching trousers for a summery white pair, and pulled her hair into an updo.
“We have grown up together, and I am so amazed by how deeply people have held these stories and this character in their hearts,” the actor reflected on stage, before treating the audience to one of her most iconic lines—“Me, a princess? Shut up!”—from the OG film.
“Being part of the Disney family also means being part of a legacy studio that deeply values the family audience it makes content for. It’s why we are working so hard to get The Princess Diaries 3 right,” she continued, thanking the fans for their patience.
Hathaway previously confirmed her plans to return as Mia Thermopolis back in 2024, though the team has yet to share any concrete details on the timing of the third installment. We do know, however, that Julie Andrews will not be making an appearance in the new movie—having broken the news to The Hollywood Reporter just last week.
“I think the absolute truth is that I think I’m really past all that now. I’m not completely retired, but it’s a different kind of work that I do these days,” said Andrews, who has shifted her focus to writing books and recording podcasts. “But truly, I don’t think I should be a part of it.”
