Brandon Sanderson‘s books are getting closer to making the leap from page to screen, and the bestselling fantasy author has offered promising new updates on two of the television projects currently in development. During his October 1 Blightfall Celebration Livestream, the author discussed both Apple’s planned adaptation of The Stormlight Archive and Tomorrow Studios’ Skyward, revealing that work is progressing on the latter’s pilot while he’s already thinking well beyond the first season of Stormlight.

The projects are separate adaptations, with Apple acquiring screen rights to Sanderson’s Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive books earlier this year, with Mistborn being developed as a feature film and Stormlight as television. Meanwhile, Skyward, Sanderson’s 2018 YA science-fiction novel, is being developed for television by Tomorrow Studios, the company behind Netflix’s One Piece. Sanderson will executive produce alongside showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, whose credits include Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The ‘Skyward’ Pilot Is Moving Forward

The Skyward adaptation was announced earlier this year, but Sanderson acknowledged during the livestream that development encountered an unexpected delay after Whedon and Tancharoen needed time away for family matters. “We picked our showrunners, but then the showrunners ended up having some personal things that slowed them down,” Sanderson explained. “So we said to take some time off.”

Now they’re back at work, with the author saying that he’s recently been communicating with the pair and has seen their latest approach to the pilot. “I’ve now had some emails from them recently, they gave me their latest pitch on the pilot, and I’m, like, ‘Great,’” he said. “They’re great, they know their stuff really well.”

Although Sanderson was originally announced as co-writer of the pilot—a detail still reflected by both his literary agency and production listings—he indicated that Whedon and Tancharoen are handling most of the actual writing at this stage. “That’s where we are, they’re working on the pilot—which I will write a little bit of, but basically they’ll save me a scene.”

Skyward centers on Spensa Nightshade, a teenager determined to become a fighter pilot and defend humanity against alien attacks despite living under the shadow of her father’s reputation as a coward. The novel launched Sanderson’s Cytoverse series in 2018.

‘The Stormlight Archive’ Season 2 Is Already on Sanderson’s Mind

Sanderson is taking a considerably more hands-on writing role with Apple’s The Stormlight Archive, and apparently he’s not waiting for Season 1 to be finished before looking toward Season 2. “The goal will be—we finish Season 1, I want all of Season 2 scripts done by the time we finish Season 1,” Sanderson said during the livestream.

That’s particularly notable considering that Season 1 hasn’t begun filming. “My job has been to write the screenplays and convince them that these books can work in screenplay form,” he told The Salt Lake Tribune in August.

Apple’s adaptation remains in development, so details such as casting and a premiere date have yet to be announced, but the source material certainly isn’t in short supply. Beginning with 2010’s The Way of Kings, The Stormlight Archive currently encompasses five main novels, with Sanderson planning 10 altogether.

And unlike many novelists whose involvement diminishes once Hollywood takes possession of their books, Sanderson negotiated substantial creative participation in the Apple projects. He has described creative control as one of the principal reasons he selected Apple as his adaptation partner.
