Cork Airport had double cause for celebration on Tuesday as it marked its two millionth passenger of 2026 and the 20th anniversary of the terminal’s opening.

More than 47m passengers have travelled through Cork Airport since the first flight arrived at the new terminal building from London Stansted shortly after 7:30am on 1 August 2006.

Over the busy August Bank Holiday weekend, as the airport welcomed 72,000 arriving and departing passengers, the airport reached the two millionth passenger mark for 2026.

Earlier this year, Cork Airport started work on a €200m capital development programme, its most ambitious since the construction of the terminal building 20 years ago.

A new mezzanine floor and passenger security screening area will open later this year, with additional boarding gates and a new pier due to open in the coming years as the airport seeks to grow capacity to 5m passengers per year.

Last year, Cork Airport had 3.46m passengers, up 13% from 2024,

“It’s 20 years since we opened our ‘new’ terminal and all of our staff are very proud of that terminal. It retains its modern feel and is still as easy, clean and well-maintained as the day it was opened,” said Niall MacCarthy, managing director at Cork Airport.

“Ultimately, buildings are buildings, and they don’t function without excellent staff providing friendly, efficient services every day.

“I’m really proud to say that the experience at Cork Airport is even better now than it was twenty years ago and will get better again as we open our new mezzanine floor and other enhancements in the months ahead. Happy birthday, Cork Airport terminal!”
