Discover Koh Samui’s Secret Luxury Wellness Haven Where Plant-Based Meets Pure Bliss—Is This the Ultimate Escape You’ve Been Missing?

Ever found yourself torn between the humble charm of a cozy guesthouse and the allure of a plush villa overlooking crystal-clear waters? Welcome to Koh Samui, Thailand’s second largest island, a place where everyone—from the barefoot backpacker to the discerning luxury seeker—finds their perfect nook. But here’s the twist: Koh Samui isn’t just about sun and sand; its wellness scene is as diverse as its accommodations. From zen-inducing retreats and bespoke wellness programs to invigorating spa therapies and daily fitness classes, this island’s charms run deep. Our recent escapade wasn’t your typical beach holiday. Instead, we dove headfirst into a trio of resorts, each with its own distinct wellness philosophy. Think the playful ‘Whatever/Whenever’ vibe at W Koh Samui, the deep-rooted holistic sanctuary at Kamalaya, and the strictly plant-powered oasis that is Kapuhala. What ties them together? Not just a commitment to wellness, but a tantalizing array of vegan and plant-based cuisine that’s as vibrant and unique as the resorts themselves. Ready to discover where luxury, wellness, and plant-based delights intertwine on this Thai paradise? Let’s dive in. LEARN MORE

As the second largest Thai island, Koh Samui has something for everyone, from simple guest houses and hostels to luxury resorts and extravagant private villas. The wellness offerings on Koh Samui are most certainly wide-ranging and varied too. From private classes and exclusive retreats, revitalising spa treatments and therapies, through to daily wellness activities and bespoke programmes tailored just for you.

Our latest Koh Samui wellness adventure included stays at a trio of resorts that all approach wellness in their own unique way. From the Whatever/Whenever philosophy of W Koh Samui, to the holistic wellness approach at Kamalaya and the plant based retreat experience at Kapuhala, each resort offered something completely different.

These three luxury resorts also served nutritious and delicious plant based and vegan food that was unique to each of them. From the 100% vegan Kapuhala and its fully plant based Sicilian restaurant, to the vegan wellness cuisine at Kamalaya, we were incredibly well catered for. But our plant based culinary adventures started at W Koh Samui where we were excited to sample dishes from the brand new Thai menu that had recently been created by Executive Sous Chef Bee.

Stylish luxury at W Koh Samui

We were hosted by W Koh Samui and invited to experience everything they had to offer during our three night stay at this stylish resort. From the moment we arrived and took in the panoramic Gulf of Thailand views across the impressive infinity pool, we were excited to explore more of this stunning resort.

Staying in a Premier Ocean View Pool Villa, which was spacious and stylish, made for the perfect home away from home. We loved the far reaching ocean views which were omnipresent, whether from our freestanding bath, lounge area, expansive decking with private infinity pool or even our ultra comfortable bed.

The large flatscreen TV and the JBL Bluetooth speaker added the tech that allowed us to create our own vibe when relaxing. During our memorable stay, the super friendly staff team were always on hand, offering to make the ‘Whatever/Whenever’ philosophy of W Hotels a reality with their attentive and professional service style.

Vegan food at W Koh Samui

From vibrant and revitalising salads, to indulgent curries and creative Japanese cuisine, the vegan food at W Koh Samui was varied and delicious. With healthy dishes including ‘Cured Watermelon Tataki’ and ‘Roasted Beetroot and Avocado Salad’ we were able to enjoy global flavours and nutrition-packed lunches at The Kitchen Table. The menu also featured a selection of delightful Thai curries and other local delights, created by the passionate and talented Executive Sous Chef Bee, and these were some of the most memorable Thai vegan dishes we’ve had in some time.

Breakfast was equally impressive, with ‘vegan egg benedict’ served on wholegrain muffins, and topped with sautéed spinach, grilled tomato, almond hollandaise and crumbled pistachios being a particular highlight. Heading to SIP & Beach Grill, we selected the vegan poke bowl with tofu, Japanese rice, wakame, edamame, cucumber, mango, avocado, corn, beans and a creamy sesame dressing to continue that healthy vibe.

The culinary offerings were elevated at NAMU where the panoramic views and refined service were perfectly paired with exquisite Japanese cuisine, including an excellent roasted eggplant with miso and truffle sauce, and coconut mango mochi that was plant based perfection.

Wellness at W Koh Samui

Our wellness journey at W Koh Samui was a combination of getting AWAY from it all in the extravagant spa with luxurious treatments, and staying active at FIT STUDIO with their daily classes. From Pilates to HIIT workouts, and from yoga classes to circuit training, the daily activities certainly allowed us to stay active during our stay. By also utilising the 24 hour gym, which was fully equipped with the latest machines and free weights, we were able to create our very own wellness programme at W Koh Samui.

Of course, after spending time in the gym and attending a number of classes, heading to the spa for some pampering and relaxation was most certainly in order. Make sure to experience THAIMAZCAL at least once during your stay, our time in this sweat lodge-inspired herbal steam room was truly unique. Combining this with their signature massage was the perfect way to end another perfect day. The combination of expert therapists and luxurious surroundings, along with the choice of eye pillows and mango or pandan lip balm, left us both feeling relaxed and rejuvenated after a session in the gym.

Plant based paradise at Kapuhala

Let’s make this clear. Kapuhala is 100% vegan and that in itself is reason to choose to stay there. But Kapuhala is more than that; it’s a space where you can relax, re-energise, retreat or just simply be. High up in the hills with the most incredible Gulf of Thailand views, this Samui gem should most certainly be on your luxury vegan travel planning radar. Or any travel planning radar for that matter.

An intimate collection of just nine luxury Tented Villas and boutique Farmhouses set amongst prehistoric boulders and twisting jungle vines present an excellent base to escape from it all and enjoy peace, tranquillity and the most delicious plant based Italian cuisine. We stayed in one of the spacious Tented Villas and were very pleased with our choice and simply fell in love with the views from the expansive decking area. We checked out the boutique Farmhouses which were very well appointed, and they would most certainly present an excellent option for those desiring a more traditional luxury experience.

Sicilian plant based cuisine at Halapua

The daily breakfast buffet was a highlight of our stay. Served poolside, and including tropical fruits, vegan muffins, chia pudding, granola, overnight oats, vegan pancakes, tofu scramble and homemade vegan sausages made us smile each and every morning. However, it’s lunch and dinner where the culinary talents and influences of vegan chef Crystal Lee and her talented team at Halapua truly come into their own. An extensive menu of traditional Sicilian cuisine that has, of course, been adapted to be 100% vegan is what makes Halapua a destination restaurant for anyone spending time on Koh Samui.

We ate our way through lightly fried polenta fries with truffle mayo, and delicate ‘polpette’ meatballs made with beans and walnuts. Pasta dishes included an excellent penne al pesto, a rich and flavour packed spaghetti ragu and a fusilli alfredo that was creamy and indulgent. This was home cooked plant based Italian cuisine at its very best and we loved it. The stuffed peppers and parmigiana were to die for, as were the arancini which were made with beetroot risotto. For those drinking alcohol, they offer their very own vegan moscato, and for those who love cake, the rich and moist chocolate cake with hot chocolate sauce was heavenly.

Wellness at Kapuhala

Boasting a 25m saltwater infinity pool that is blessed with more of those stunning seascapes, a fully equipped gym and private wood fired sauna, steam room and ice bath, Kapuhala is a wonderful wellness option on Koh Samui.

Arrange an early morning yoga class or sunset meditation that is aligned with your very own approach to wellness, or join one of the wellness retreats that they host throughout the year where you can enjoy a bespoke programme of treatments, classes and of course the nutritious and delicious plant based Sicilian cuisine. Or for those that wish to follow their own wellness path, enjoy sunrise yoga with ocean views on your private decking before heading to the delightful pool for a pre breakfast swim.

Holistic wellness at Kamalaya Koh Samui

Kamalaya is an award winning holistic sanctuary that is sure to impress on so many levels. The natural hillside setting, and luxuriously styled villas, alongside their unique approach to wellness and creative wellness cuisine, make it very easy to understand why they have won multiple awards since opening in 2005.

Whether you are following one of their programmes, which focus on wellness concepts including detox, optimal fitness and yoga, or you are creating your own bespoke programme supported by the talented team of therapists and practitioners, you will certainly enjoy your wellness journey at Kamalaya. The selection of rooms, suites and villas allow guests to choose the accommodation that suits them, and we loved our spacious sea view villa with uninterrupted ocean views, expansive decking and no TV, which was the perfect place to relax and recharge, preparing ourselves for the day ahead and all it had in store.

Vegan food at Kamalaya

Executive Chef Mohan and his talented team have created extensive menus that are wellness focused at both Soma and Amrita Café, the two restaurants at Kamalaya. With clear labelling and dedicated inclusions for those following the signature detox programme, choosing plant based options was both straightforward and exciting.

The detox menu inclusions are primarily vegan with the ability to add your plant based protein of choice, tofu or tempeh, whilst the à la carte menus offer a selection of delicious and nutritious plant based options throughout. From the daily elixir shots at breakfast to the divine chocolate pie which we just couldn’t resist, our culinary journey at Kamalaya was memorable. We enjoyed breakfast dishes including perfectly flavoured tofu scramble with psyllium and seed bread, health giving mung bean kitcharee, and platters of grilled tofu, savoury pancakes, smoked carrot hummus and vegetables. Our lunches and dinners served at Amrita Café and Soma, offered even more exciting plant based culinary adventures. Nutrition packed and flavourful salads, delicate raw tacos and a wholesome mung bean risotto were some of our favourite dishes.

Indulgent and healthy desserts included dark chocolate terrine, and chocolate pie made with Thai single origin dark chocolate, mixed seed crust, coconut milk and orange sauce that we quite simply could not get enough of.

Our wellness journey at Kamalaya

During our three night stay we were not on one of the Kamalaya wellness programmes that are based around your own wellness goals, but we were free to create our own wellness journey by joining a selection of the classes offered as part of the ‘Holistic Activity Schedule’.

Upon arrival, we were both were invited to a wellness consultation with one of the expert team members, which involved reviewing the results of our Body Bio-Impedance Analysis. The results offered an overview of our body composition, which presented us with goals and aspirations as to how we could adapt our current approach to wellness once we returned home.

We enjoyed the meditation, qigong, chanting and yoga classes each day, and also found the spinal mobility class to be particularly useful. Our daily gym sessions were followed by time in the herbal steam cavern (which is built into the rocks of the hillside) before plunging into the ice-cold pool.

The ‘Ajarn Cave’, which has been used by monks for hundreds of years for quiet contemplation and meditation, was another particularly peaceful place to practise. The approach to wellness at Kamalaya is truly holistic, with multi-disciplinary experts on hand to guide you on your chosen path to mental, physical and spiritual wellness.

This was our first trip to Koh Samui for many years and we most certainly won’t be waiting that long until we return. Wellness travel and plant based dining are alive and kicking on the island, with each of the three resorts that hosted us offering extensive and varied options for vegans and plant based diners. Their wellness offerings were equally as impressive, allowing us to embrace the classes, programmes and activities to the level that suited us. Our research shows that this approach to wellness and cuisine isn’t exclusive to these three resorts, but is a theme that seems to be running throughout the island, where this type of travel is being embraced, developed and taken to the next level. See you again soon, Koh Samui.
