As dad to a 10-year-old girl with fine textured hair, I know a thing or two about detangling. It’s part of our nightly ritual, in fact. Every evening, after my little girl showers, I spritz on a little conditioning mist and go at it.

We’ve had our ups and downs. Sometimes the bristles glide through her hair like a hot knife to butter; other times it’s like a painful (for her) game of tug o’ war. I’ve tried my share of brushes and always seem to come back to the classic Tangle Teezer Ultimate Detangler. It’s reliably efficient and effective, so when I learned that the brand was launching a brand-new version—one tailored to hair type—I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it.

Meet the Tangle Teezer Complete Carebrush. The brush is half a decade in the making and boasts multiple benefits, including enhanced shine and a scalp-stimulating massage effect. I got a sneak peek back in May when I traveled to Tangle Teezer’s home turf—London, England—to learn about the innovation. I’ve been using it at home ever since. But I had to get some other opinions in the mix.

So, I turned to an eager bunch of testers from the Women’s Health editorial team. Our three guinea pigs each have a different hair type—fine, straight, and coily—so I knew they’d be the perfect trio to put the Complete Carebrush to the test.

Ahead, more about how Tangle Teezer developed this new addition to their portfolio—and what our editors truly think about the brush.

What is the Tangle Teezer Complete Carebrush?

The thing that makes the brush different from the brand’s other offerings is that it’s designed to do more than merely detangle (though it does that surprisingly well). It features a patent-pending bristle design with alternating oval- and triangle-shaped teeth that enhances hair flow through the brush to avoid pulling and tugging. Like the brand’s Ultimate Detangler, it feels comfortable in the hand—you’re in control here—and sturdy enough to stand up to even the most major snarls.

The Complete Carebrush also comes in three different varieties: One with softer bristles for fine hair, one with medium-flex bristles for straight or wavy hair, and one with firmer bristles for curly or coily strands. At its core, this tool is designed with hair health in mind, and in consumer testing 70% of users reported less breakage and 84% said their hair looked smoother and shinier.

Too good to be true? It was time to find out.

What our testers like about the Tangle Teezer Complete Carebrush.

Three intrepid Women’s Health editors—lifestyle director Lindsay Geller, digital designer Taryn Colbert, and associate health and fitness editor Addison Aloian—each tried one type of Complete Carebrush for a week. According to them, there’s a lot to love here.

It glides through strands.

Aloian, who tried the brush designed specifically for fine hair, raved about its ability to detangle without catching on knots. “It’s easy to use and grip and moved super smoothly through my hair when I got out of the shower,” she says. “I do a pretty good job with conditioner to begin with, but it still smoothed out my hairs easily.”

It adds volume.

One of the most surprising benefits of the Tangle Teezer Complete Carebrush was that it added a little oomph to Geller’s strands (she tested the straight hairbrush). “I definitely think that brushing my hair with this after a blowout adds volume, which really gives this an edge over other detanglers,” she says. “I also like that the bristles are close together because I think that really helps with the detangling and adding volume.”

The bristles are sturdy enough for thicker hair.

Colbert has thick textured hair with a naturally tight curl pattern and assures that the brush designed for curly and coily is up to the challenge of detangling this hair type. “I find the bristles can withstand more pressure than my old brush without bending,” she says. “I don’t see this brush snapping or breaking at all. And I could see my curls separating through the bristles.” Colbert liked the fact that the bristles themselves varied in length, meaning they were able to pick up each and every hair.

Bottom line: Is the Tangle Teezer Complete Carebrush worth it?

The short answer: Yes. Some of our testers would even consider ditching their old brush in favor of the Complete Carebrush. In spite of some minor drawbacks—Colbert wishes the brush were easier to clean and Aloain is skeptical that the shorter bristles were able to grab all of her shoulder-length hair—all three testers liked the way Tangle Teezer’s latest innovation performed.

At nearly $23, the Complete Carebrush is slightly more expensive than some of its direct competitors (we’re talking a few bucks), but some of the added benefits like enhanced shine and volume make the purchase well worth the cost. As for me, I’m sold. The Complete Carebrush has made my hectic mornings with my daughter so much easier—less ouches, more time to pack her lunch for the day.

If you’re in the market for a new detangler, this one’s a sure bet. But don’t take my word for it. As a pretty discerning middle school beauty aficionado once told me, “Bro, this brush is so fire.”
