Every year, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show comes with its fans and its critics. As with all runways, the annual spectacle invites conversation surrounding the looks, the music, the design, and the performances. For the most part, these dialogues are between fellow watchers… but today, Gigi Hadid joined the chat.

On Threads, the model responded to a critique of Swedish model Elsa Hosk’s walk, telling the user that they “have no clue” what it’s like to walk with the Victoria’s Secret wings on.

The post included a video of Hosk strutting down the runway in massive gold wings, spanning the width of the stage. The user, in a judgment of the model’s walk, compared it to that of the OG angels from the late 1990s and early aughts, writing, “Imagine Giselle (sic) walking down the runway like this.” (Gisele Bündchen, along with the likes of Tyra Banks, Helena Christensen, Adriana Lima, Heidi Klum, Candice Swanepoel, and Alessandra Ambrosio, helped defined the golden age of VS).

Coming to her fellow model’s defense, Hadid clapped back, writing, “This really PMO.” She went on to explain the difficulties behind walking with today’s wings, and how they have changed in the decades since the show first started. “I’m the biggest fan of the OG Angels; but even the scale and size of this runway is not comparable to the OG shows,” she typed. “It’s a looong walk in the wings these days and they can be 75+ lbs, 10+ ft tall, sometimes animatronic, etc. The wings are getting bigger because the viewers love it and they’re MAJOR but NOT aero-dynamic, then add the gust of runway fans!!”

She noted that it took three men to get the wings off of the models, and finished with a bit of praise for Hosk: “Elsa is stunning, strong, and carried these like a boss.”
