Here’s Why Your Remote Work ‘Freedom’ Is Setting You Up for a Massive Power Play — Are You Ready to Seize It?

Here’s Why Your Remote Work ‘Freedom’ Is Setting You Up for a Massive Power Play — Are You Ready to Seize It?

Remember the early days of working from home? No frantic scrambles to beat traffic, no awkward elevator rides — just you, your laptop, and the luxury of calling your own shots. Maybe you snagged lunch with your family or squeezed in a midday stroll. Heck, maybe your “office” was the couch, and you found your groove when the world was asleep. That sweet taste of freedom — having real control over your workday — once experienced, sticks with you. And let’s be honest: handing that control back? Not an easy pill to swallow.

But here’s the kicker — working from home didn’t just shuffle where we work, it rewired how we think about our jobs altogether. It showed us all that work could bend around our lives, instead of being the other way around. Yet, as those remote days gradually fade, many of us find ourselves stuck in the whirlwind of shifting rules and dwindling flexibility. When control feels borrowed and can be snatched away in a blink, it begs the question: How do we get more of it — for good?

If you’ve caught yourself wondering whether there’s a way to reclaim that elusive control — not just over your schedule but over your entire career — you’re in the right place. It’s time to dive into what real career ownership looks like, why it’s the game changer we all desperately need, and how you can actually take back the reins. Ready to find out how to get more of it?

Here’s How to Get More of It

man-working-on-laptop-from-home-on-sofaRemember those first months of working from home. There was no commute, no need to rush out the door. You could have lunch with your family or take a walk in the middle of the day. Maybe you found you worked best early in the morning or after the kids went to bed.

For many professionals, it was the first time they truly had a say in how their workday looked. Once you’ve experienced that kind of control, it’s not easy to let it go.

Even years later, working from home still affects our lives in ways we’re just starting to see. Stanford economist Nick Bloom, an expert on remote work, recently explained some of these changes to Business Insider. He estimates that remote work led to a 5% rise in fertility in the U.S. and Northern Europe. Hybrid schedules also helped reduce air pollution in big cities. According to Bloom, the biggest lasting effect of the work-from-home era is artificial intelligence, which is now a major topic in workplace conversations.

But there’s another important effect to consider. Working from home changed what people expect from their jobs. It showed millions that work can fit around their lives, instead of forcing life to fit around work.

Where Remote Work Stands Today

us-work-arrangements-donutRemote work hasn’t gone away, but for many people, it’s become less common.

In the U.S., about 26% of paid workdays were worked from home in July 2026, according to the Survey of Working Arrangements and Attitudes run by Bloom and his colleagues. Over the past year, just 12% of full-time employees were fully remote, and 26% were hybrid. The other 62% worked full-time on site.

In Canada, the shift back to the office has been even clearer. Statistics Canada reports that the share of employed Canadians working only from home fell from 18.7% in May 2022 to 11.4% in May 2026. Today, nearly 79% work only outside the home.

Those numbers represent millions of people who once had flexibility, only to see it taken away, sometimes with just one company memo.

Some people still have a bit of flexibility, but they worry it could disappear. They wonder if the next reorganization, budget cut, or new boss will take away the one or two days at home that make their week manageable. Even when nothing has changed yet, that uncertainty can be exhausting.

What Working From Home Really Gave Us

cheerful-woman-receiving-gift-from-blond-hairedIt’s easy to laugh about sweatpants and video calls, but remote work offered something more important than comfort. It gave people control.

  • People gained control over their time. Hours that used to be spent commuting could now go to family, health, or rest.
  • They also had control over where they lived. Some moved closer to family or to a city that was more affordable.
  • People could manage their energy better, planning their day around the times they focus best.
  • They had more control over their lives. School pickups, doctor visits, and caring for parents became easier to manage.

That’s what people miss most when flexibility disappears. It’s not the couch—it’s the control.

The Catch: Borrowed Control Can Be Taken Back

Here’s the hard truth: for most employees, remote work was never truly theirs. It was something allowed by the company, and that permission can be taken away whenever priorities shift.

Return-to-office mandates made this clear. Many people were productive and happy working from home, but that didn’t matter—they weren’t the ones making the decision.

For some, the change happened with little warning. A manager announced a new policy, and suddenly the routine they’d built over years no longer worked. Childcare plans fell apart, long commutes returned, and some people who moved during the remote years now have to choose between their home and their job.

woman-in-a-pink-striped-shirtAI is making that sense of lost control even stronger. As Bloom points out, AI is now the biggest topic in the workplace. Jobs are changing, and many professionals wonder if their roles will look the same in a few years. When both your workplace and your job can change quickly, it’s natural to start asking bigger questions.

Who’s really in charge of my career?

Signs You’re Ready for More Control

Missing working from home doesn’t always mean you need a major career change. But some feelings are worth noticing. You might be ready to look for more control if:

  • You dread Sunday nights more than you used to.
  • Your schedule feels like it belongs to someone else.
  • You worry that one policy change or layoff could upend your life.
  • You have ideas and experience you can’t fully use in your current role.
  • You’ve started to wonder what it would be like to build something of your own.

If some of these sound familiar, it doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful or unrealistic. It just means your goals have changed. Working from home may have helped you see what you really want.

From Flexible Job to Career You Control

Working from home gave people a glimpse of what control feels like. Career Ownership gives you the real thing.

When you take charge of your career, you help set the rules. You decide how your time is organized, where you work, and what you’re working toward. Flexibility isn’t just a perk that can be taken away—it’s built into the way you work.

That doesn’t mean you’ll never work hard or have responsibilities. Customers, partners, and goals still matter. The difference is that you get to make the big decisions about your time and your direction.

Many professionals already see this. In the TES Generational Career Confidence Survey, 80% of employees said ownership gives people more control over their careers. And 70% believe ownership offers more opportunity, stability, and financial growth than a traditional job.

Career Ownership also lets you plan your work around four key parts of a fulfilling career: Income, Lifestyle, Wealth, and Equity™. The Lifestyle part is where that work-from-home freedom fits in. What do you want your days to look like? How much time do you want with your family? Where do you want to live? With Career Ownership, you answer these questions.

That doesn’t mean Career Ownership is easy or right for everyone. It takes effort, planning, and a clear look at your goals. That’s why you shouldn’t try to figure it out by yourself. It out alone.

How a Career Ownership Coach® Helps You Take Back Control

businesswomen-discussing-project-detailsRemote work showed you what control can feel like. A Career Ownership Coach® can help you find even more, intentionally and on your own terms.

Career Ownership Coaching™ begins with your life, not with a product. A coach will help you:

  • Figure out what control means for you. Is it about your schedule, your location, or your income potential? Your coach will help you put this into words using Income, Lifestyle, Wealth, and Equity™.
  • Take a real look at your skills, savings, and how much risk you’re comfortable with.
  • Explore options you might not have considered and rule out the ones that don’t match your goals.
  • Do careful research so your decisions are based on facts, not just frustration with your latest office policy.

The goal isn’t to push you into anything. It’s to help you see your options clearly and make confident choices. Some people find that ownership is the way to get the control they’ve been missing. Others discover a better way to shape their next role. Either way, you stop waiting for someone else to decide how your life works.
