I HAVE, AT this moment, a small blue vial in my refrigerator that contains what I can only describe as a liquid distillation of the best version of my own biology. (It’s behind last night’s leftovers, next to a jar of mustard. Can’t miss it.) It’s called a secretome, and it’s made up of the secretions of stem cells, harvested from my hair follicles. I’ve been using it to help heal the thousands of tiny needle holes that I asked someone to inflict on my face so I could look maybe three years younger.
You probably have questions.
The company behind all this is Acorn Biolabs. Its pitch, in brutally simplified form, goes something like this: Stem cells are often called the body’s master builders—the raw material from which every cell type, in every organ, is constructed—and doctors can use them to help rebuild or repair different parts of the body. Instead of plumbing your bone marrow or fat deposits for stem cells, which is how it’s typically done, Acorn collects them from a more convenient location: your scalp. All they require from patients is about 50 plucked hairs, plus an annual fee to keep them cryogenically frozen until you might need them.
That’s the first half of the business, and while there are plenty of companies that will store your stem cells for some vaguely defined future, very few will turn them into something you can actually use in a few weeks. That’s where the second half of Acorn’s business—the part currently sitting in my fridge—comes in. Rather than have a doctor inject stem cells directly into my skin (which at this point would raise all kinds of regulatory red flags), Acorn treats them like tiny antiaging factories. In a lab, over the course of a few weeks, the stem cells secrete chemical signals—stuff like growth factors, cytokines, and exosomes—that tell other cells how to behave. Heal this. Grow that. Make. More. Collagen! All those secretions together become the secretome. Acorn freeze-dries it and ships it to your doctor, who will reconstitute it into a liquid serum made entirely from your own biology.
For the secretome to really do its job, though, it can’t just sit on top of your skin—it’s got to travel way deep down to where cellular magic happens. That’s how I found myself reclining in a dermatologist’s chair a few weeks ago while my face was repeatedly punctured with tiny needles—standard microneedling, just another day on the job for your intrepid correspondent. As the needles created tiny microchannels across my cheeks and chin, the doctor applied the secretome to my skin, allowing the growth factor et al. to penetrate deeper. The doctor then sent me home with the rest of the secretome to apply a few times a day as my skin recovered.
I’ve done enough of these procedures to have a baseline expectation: a few days of redness, some dryness, a vague sense that something is happening beneath the surface. (The point of microneedling is to create tiny injuries that prompt your body to repair the area, producing collagen and elastin and other things that can make you look younger.) This time, it healed faster than ever before. The usual itchiness and irritation were quieter. Within a few days, my skin was back to baseline—and then it started to look slightly better than baseline. A little more even, a little more glowy, a little more…bouncy, for lack of a less embarrassing word. Could I prove that this was meaningfully better than, say, PRP or any of the other alphabet-soup add-ons that dermatologists offer? I could not. There is no control version of my face where we ran the same experiment without the stem cell–derived serum.
And this is where things get tricky.
The entire category—regenerative aesthetics—is still in that phase where the science is promising and the mechanisms make sense, but large-scale, independent validation is still very much in progress. In other words: This might be the future of skin care. Someday.
There is also the question of cost and commitment. This is not a casual add-on. You are paying to bank your cells, to produce the secretome, and to use it across multiple treatments over time. If you are someone looking for a one-off glow-up, there are easier (and cheaper) ways to get there.
But if you are already playing in this sandbox—if you’re doing microneedling, lasers, hair restoration, any of the things that fall under the ever-expanding purview of cosmetic dermatologists, aestheticians, and med spas—this starts to look less like a wild experiment and more like an interesting upgrade.
Perhaps most interesting of all: The banked stem cells don’t just have to be for your face. There’s promising research suggesting that stem cells derived from hair follicles may be able to be reprogrammed into other cell types—bone, cartilage, fat, even certain kinds of neurons—that could help repair the parts of your aging or injured body that need repairing. For now, the use case is more grounded: better healing, better skin, better hair. I like the results, and I’m aware that part of what I’m buying into here is not just a product but a premise: that capturing and redeploying my own biology will eventually become a standard part of how I can maintain and repair my body.
