BOYLE Sports has launched a new advertising campaign featuring former football star David Ginola as the bookmaker looks to bring a more cinematic approach to its brand marketing.
The campaign, produced by Boldspace and directed by Elliot Simpson, promotes the company’s new Squad Builder product and takes inspiration from Hollywood films.
The 60-second and 30-second adverts feature two football fans discussing Squad Builder before Ginola interrupts and takes over the conversation, speaking directly to camera to explain how the product works.
The creative approach echoes celebrity cameos featured in the Oscar-winning film The Big Short, while combining humour and cinematic storytelling.
Squad Builder allows customers to select between two and five players from major football leagues and choose from seven statistical targets, including goals, assists, shots, tackles and cards.
Rather than requiring every selected player to achieve an individual target, the players’ performances are combined to produce one overall squad total.
Gill Blake-Swift, director of brand at BOYLE Sports, said the company wanted to create “a piece of entertainment first, not simply another betting advert”.
“We saw Squad Builder as an opportunity to push the creative further, with more confidence, personality and cultural relevance,” she said.
“David has the charisma to make the idea work immediately and the inspiration behind the film gives us a brilliant way of explaining a new product without making it feel like a demo.”
The campaign forms part of BOYLE Sports’ wider ‘Back Yourself’ brand positioning and comes as the company expands its presence in English domestic football.
The bookmaker recently became Official Betting Partner of Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, while continuing its front-of-shirt sponsorship with West Ham United.

A separate version of the campaign will feature Ginola promoting the operator’s Early Payout offer, under which football bets are settled when a team takes a two-goal lead, even if the match subsequently ends in a draw or defeat.
The campaign launches across TV, video-on-demand, digital, social media and customer-facing channels from September 23.
