How Steve Lockhart and Mike Smith are bringing handcrafted grooming, cult cinema and fragrance together.

Long before Steve Lockhart was creating fragrances inspired by cult horror films, he was experimenting with hair pomade in his kitchen, ruining his wife’s cookware in the process. Thirteen years later, the founder of Lockhart’s Authentic has built a Michigan-based grooming and fragrance business where monsters, heavy metal and cult cinema are part of the identity.

Alongside Chief Content Officer Mike Smith, founder of Dauntless Modern Grooming, Lockhart has expanded beyond traditional men’s hair products. The brand’s Lab Leaks fragrance collection draws on films including The Toxic Avenger, The Return of the Living Dead and Terminator 2, pairing carefully developed scents with elaborate, collectible packaging.

“I’ve always viewed Lockhart’s as an artistic expression. It’s my artistic outlet,” Lockhart tells SWAGGER Magazine. As a child, he drew monsters and ghouls; today, those interests inform the products he creates.

The business began in 2013, when Lockhart and his wife, Nicole, were building their life together. He had moved from repairing cars to selling them while studying finance, and struggled to find a styling product that could keep his newly grown-out hair in place during long days on the dealership lot.

He began testing formulas at home, sourcing ingredients including beeswax from a local beekeeper. “I was kind of doing this without her knowing I was doing it and ruined her pots and pans,” he recalls.

Friends encouraged him to sell his creations on Etsy, and word spread through the grooming community. “My barber was telling me, people are talking about you all over Instagram. I’m like, what the hell is Instagram?”

His breakthrough product was Goon Grease, developed when slick, high-shine hairstyles were particularly popular. Instead of layering two pomades for hold and shine, Lockhart wanted one product that could do both. Around one in the morning, he returned to the stove to develop the formula.

“That was our first jar of Goon Grease that I poured that day. And I never changed the formula since,” he says. It became the brand’s bestseller. Production has since moved to a warehouse, but employees still use hands-on techniques Lockhart developed himself.

That craftsmanship caught the attention of Mike Smith, then reviewing grooming products on YouTube under the name Modern Man TV. After Nicole introduced him to the company, he travelled from Nebraska to Michigan to film Lockhart making Goon Grease for his Behind the Brew series.

“To say it’s art is exactly the way that I saw it,” Smith recalls. “It was like watching somebody paint. That’s what it looks like to watch Steve make the products.”

Their friendship eventually became a creative partnership. Smith founded Dauntless Modern Grooming, inspired by his late brother Tyler’s fearless approach to style. After Ronald Abramson joined Lockhart’s as CEO, bringing investment and business experience to support its growth, Dauntless became part of the company and Smith came aboard full-time to oversee content and marketing.

With additional resources and a shared enthusiasm for experimentation, Lockhart and Smith were given greater creative freedom to develop new products, explore unconventional ideas and take the business in unexpected directions.

That approach helped produce Lab Leaks. For years, Lockhart had experimented with fragrance through a seasonal promotion letting customers choose scents for their favourite hair products. Standalone fragrance became a serious opportunity after the company added one to a collaboration inspired by The Toxic Avenger.

The response exceeded expectations. According to Lockhart, the fragrance generated approximately ten times the sales of the accompanying hair products, signalling an opportunity to expand into an entirely new category.

The pairing of a grotesque toxic-waste monster with a premium scent generated online conversation. Then a packaging shortage prompted Lockhart to find replacement containers resembling miniature toxic-waste barrels.

“I was like, this is perfect. You know what? We’re gonna make all of our fragrances look like toxic waste,” he recalls.

The concept became Lab Leaks, with horror-inspired fragrances and artwork designed for collectors. Its next breakthrough arrived through The Return of the Living Dead. Steve Wolsh of Living Dead Media invited Lockhart and Smith to present their products at Los Angeles Comic Con in 2025, giving them roughly 30 days to prepare.

Lockhart spent late nights drawing beside a burn barrel in his backyard. His daughters helped pack products, and labels arrived so late that he carried them to California in his luggage and finished preparing the bottles there.

“It was just by the skin of our teeth that we actually made this happen,” he says.

The enthusiastic convention response also supplied video content for future advertisements. Lockhart estimates ads using that footage have generated six figures in sales. Lab Leaks officially launched at Halloween 2025, and by the September 2026 interview he estimated its sales were roughly four times those of the rest of the company’s product lines combined.

For Smith and Lockhart, the goal isn’t to place a familiar film title on an ordinary bottle. “We want to make something that belongs within the world of your film or your character,” Smith says. Lockhart designs much of the artwork himself, even hiding coded film dialogue in the Terminator 2 packaging.

The creative approach also shapes the company’s current seasonal releases. The Drive-In Collection explores vintage movie genres through fragrances called Giallo, Thriller and XXX. The Fire & Brimstone collection has expanded with Infernal, featuring leather, saffron and rich spices, and Eternal, a brighter, fiery variation. Both join the original scent in the Infernal Trinity set.

“I’m trying to tell stories through fragrance,” Lockhart says. “Creating art through fragrance.”

While Lab Leaks has introduced the brand to a new audience, grooming remains an important part of its identity. From longstanding favourites like Goon Grease to products such as Gritty Paste, Lockhart’s continues to develop its styling range, while Dauntless offers a unisex approach to hair care.

Looking ahead, Lockhart and Smith are focused on growing both sides of the business, developing new products and collaborations, and expanding their international reach. Fragrance distribution remains a particular priority, with the company navigating alcohol-related shipping restrictions while pursuing opportunities in Europe and the United Kingdom.

For Lockhart, whether he’s developing a new pomade or a fragrance inspired by his favourite films, the motivation remains the same: creating something that makes everyday routines more enjoyable.

“There’s little Easter eggs,” he says of the packaging, “because like I said, I’m a fan too, so I’m trying to make something that the fans would enjoy.”
