Mayo’s historic All-Ireland football victory sparked a huge spike in mobile data usage across Ireland, with eir reporting a 36% increase in network traffic as fans shared celebrations, streamed content and posted reactions online.

The telecommunications provider said demand on its mobile network surged on Sunday compared with an average day, reflecting how supporters increasingly rely on smartphones and streaming services to experience major sporting events.

The biggest jump came in County Mayo, where data traffic across eir’s four main mobile network sites in Castlebar rose by almost 49% on the night of the team’s homecoming.

Usage climbed from 4.5 terabytes on the previous Sunday to 6.7 terabytes as thousands of supporters celebrated the county’s long-awaited success.

According to eir, the surge comfortably outpaced the increase generated by the recent FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, which drove a 30% rise in data usage.

The company said the figures highlight the changing way audiences consume live sporting events, with fans increasingly following matches and celebrations across multiple devices rather than relying solely on traditional television broadcasts.

An eir spokesperson said the scale of the increase underlined the growing importance of reliable digital connectivity during major national events.

“To see a whopping 36% increase in data usage during Mayo’s historic win demonstrates just how central streaming has become to everyday life in Ireland.”

The spokesperson added that customers were using the network in a variety of ways, from watching matches live at home to following celebrations while travelling or supporting the team from overseas.

“Whether people were watching at home, following the match on the move, or supporting the team overseas, our networks stood up to the demand and kept Ireland connected when it mattered most.”

Sport wasn’t the only driver of increased viewing.

Eir also reported strong engagement with television entertainment, with this year’s Love Island final attracting significant audiences.

The company said one in four viewers watched the programme through eir TV, highlighting the continued popularity of streaming services alongside live sport.

Eir said the combined insights from its fixed broadband, mobile network and eir TV platform demonstrate that Irish consumers are increasingly choosing to watch live events, highlights and on-demand content whenever and wherever suits them, rather than being tied to a single television screen.
