If you asked me a year ago which sneaker brand I wear most, I’d probably say Nike, On, Hoka, or Brooks. Asics wasn’t really on my radar until recently, when I got my hands on the Gel-Kayano 20. There are some shoes I buy because they’re comfortable, and then there are those that are just undeniably cool. The Asics Gel-Kayano 20 falls squarely into the second category. It immediately became the pair I grab whenever I’m heading out the door, whether I’m wearing a matching workout set or the capris that have been living in my closet all summer. In fact, it’s kicked out retro New Balance and Reebok kicks as my stylish sneaker of choice.

Asics absolutely nailed that early-2000s running shoe aesthetic that’s super in right now. The sweeping lines and unexpected color combos give it a futuristic vibe without trying too hard. Last weekend, I wore mine with a pair of white bermuda shorts and a simple black tank to mini golf, and I literally got complimented twice before the 18th hole. I snagged the Fossil/Cream colorway, which is technically light green, but looks a bit more khaki-colored from far away. I’m super glad with my decision and feel like it pairs well with almost anything in my wardrobe.

Of course, it wouldn’t get nearly as much wear if it weren’t comfortable. After wearing this shoe for about a month on city trips and Long Island outings, my feet may just be the happiest they’ve ever been. When it first launched in 2013, the Gel-Kayano 20 was originally made for running. Today’s version carries over the features that made it popular for logging miles–most notably the shock-absorption and support system–, even though I mostly wear mine casually. There are gel inserts in both the heel and forefoot that soften each step, and they do a great job taking the edge off long days on my feet.

My feet still feel good at the end of the day after 10,000+ steps, which isn’t something I can say about every trendy sneaker in my closet. I love that it hugs my foot without squeezing it, thanks to a supportive cage on top of the breathable mesh upper. It’s definitely more structured than the super-soft, marshmallowy sneakers I’ve been reaching for on runs lately (like the Hoka Clifton 11 or the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25), but for walking, commuting, travel days, and everyday wear, this is the kind of shoe I prefer.

I also never had that awkward break-in period. It felt good from the first wear, and now it’s molded to my feet in a way that makes them feel even better. It’s the shoe I throw on for coffee runs that somehow turn into all-day outings, and it’s almost guaranteed to get at least one “Wait…what sneakers are those?” from a stranger. It’s become a running joke with my boyfriend because someone comments on the shoe almost every time I wear it.

The only catch? I don’t really run in this sneaker. Not because it can’t handle it, but because I like it too much as an everyday shoe. I also tend to gravitate toward softer, more flexible trainers when I’m actually heading out for a run, whereas this one feels a little more structured. For everything else, though—walking around the city, traveling, running errands, grabbing dinner, commuting to the office—I can’t stop reaching for the Gel-Kayano 20. It’s one of the few sneakers that feel just as exciting a month later as they did the day I unboxed them.
