In her latest album Middle of Nowhere, which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 on May 1, Grammy Award-winner Kacey Musgraves confesses she’s going through a bit of a dry spell. (Give it a listen. You’ll get it.) But in her first-ever fashion collaboration with iconic denim brand Lee, abundance is the name of the game.

“There’s a lot of different sides of me,” Musgraves says over Zoom. “I like telling stories in a lot of different dimensional forms, and fashion is just another way to express yourself and explore your identity. I like having the creative freedom to explore all those facets, and express all of that through different mediums.”

Since last week, eagle-eyed Musgraves fans (Muskrats? Musketeers?) have spotted Kacey Musgraves-branded Lee clothes popping up around the country. It was an accidental preview of today’s official reveal for Kacey Lee, a new collaboration between the country music superstar and the 137-year-old brand. Walmart is also on board as the official retailer.

There’s kismet in Musgraves’ newfound fashion alliance: “Lee” happens to be Musgraves’s middle name. “Lee approached us, and it felt like an immediate ‘yes’ for me. It’s a nostalgic brand, so it felt like a really fun partnership.”

Kacey Lee launches with more than one hundred pieces for men and women that runs the gamut from jeans, truckers, and western shirts to sleepwear, swimwear, and accessories like hats, bandanas, belts, bags, and keychains. All the pieces are made in the spirit of vintage Americana and woven together with Musgraves’ music (not quite literally, but there are lyrics from Middle of Nowhere printed on the fabric).

“The collection represents a lot of styles,” Musgraves says. “There are tinges of Western, because that was my childhood. There’s some streetwear too. Looking at blending the modern with the traditional is something I do in my music, and so it naturally extended into the collection too.”

“This is the first time that I’ve forayed into designing stuff that men can wear,” Musgraves says.

The men’s side of the collection takes cues from Texas workwear. Kacey Lee dresses guys in denim for days, with button-down shirts, chambrays, and–my personal favorite–a zip-up jacket with an all-over bandana print. For Musgraves, it was a new and compelling exercise to think about male silhouettes and sensibilities. “This is the first time that I’ve forayed into designing stuff that men can wear,” she says.

There are a lot of matching sets in the mix too. That’s no accident. “It’s really hip to see a man in a full set, and having the confidence to wear a full print,” Musgraves says. (Noted.) “I personally love a set, and it really looks great on a man.”

As for the rest of the aesthetic inspiration, the “Loneliest Girl” singer tips her Stetson to Ralph Lauren (“one of my favorite designers”) for providing a North Star for her concepts. “You can see over time he’s remained relevant and classic and true, and never caved to trends. I had that ethos in mind when I was creating,” says Musgraves, “It’s things that will still look good, not just tomorrow, but in five years. I try to approach music that way as well. It’s not about chasing a viral moment. It’s about sticking with elements that are really timeless.”

I ask Musgraves if Kacey Lee is the start of an ongoing endeavor. “It’s a fun way to express myself outside of music. Who knows what’s ahead?”
