Inside the Untold Drama of Charli XCX and George Daniel’s Rollercoaster Romance — What Really Went Down?

This past June, Charli XCX used her Brat album to declare that “everything is romantic.” And for the past couple of years, things really have been for the Cambridge, England–born singer.

It all began back in 2019, when the experimental pop star, born Charlotte Emma Aitchison, crossed paths with pop rock band the 1975 at an award ceremony, where the two British acts snapped a photo together. Then, two years later, the band and Charli reunited in the studio, where they worked on a song with R&B artist No Rome.

Soon after, it appeared that Charli had developed a close relationship with the 1975’s drummer, George Daniel, who quickly started appearing in Instagram posts from the singer. Then, in early 2023, Charli finally confirmed their relationship to the world, a mere 10 months before they got engaged.

Two years after going public with their relationship, the couple tied the knot on July 19, 2025, in an intimate London ceremony. Shortly after the nuptials, videos of Charli and Daniel surfaced online, with the singer looking blissfully happy alongside her husband. The bride wore a Vivienne Westwood minidress for her special day.

Charli has been using her hit songs and sold-out shows to sing about her infatuation with Daniel. But if you’re only just now catching up with the couple, we’ve broken down everything you need to know about Charli XCX and George Daniel’s relationship below.

July 2025: Charli and George marry in London

Charli XCX and George Daniel marry on July 19, 2025, at Hackney Town Hall in London. A video of the couple surrounded by the family and loved ones was shared online.

The singer wore a white off-the-shoulder gown from Vivienne Westwood with ruched fabric wrapping around her waist. She wore her hair down and carried a white bouquet.

Shortly after the news broke, Charli shared a glimpse into the festivities on social media. In one TikTok, she shows off her wedding dress while wearing a pair of black sunglasses.

She also shared a video of her friends and husband partying in their hotel room after the wedding. For the after-party fun, Charli changed into a different white baby doll dress with belled sleeves from Nova Cora.

Daniel made an appearance in the video rocking silk pajamas, holding Charli’s wedding veil to his head with one hand and a cigarette in the other.

She captioned the clip, “Bridal party energy!”

September 2024: Charli gives George multiple shout-outs during her New York City Sweat Tour stop.

When Charli XCX and Troye Sivan bring their joint Sweat Tour to New York City, Daniel is one of the stars present in the audience. Throughout the set, Charli gives her beau a few different shout-outs, like when his name is mentioned in the song “Sympathy Is a Knife,” and she pauses to wave to him, saying, “Hi, George!” Later, she also takes a moment to tell the audience how in love she is with her fiancé.

July 9, 2024: Charli tries to get George to do the viral TikTok “Apple” dance.

Following the release of her critically acclaimed sixth studio album, Brat, Charli’s song “Apple” goes viral when creator Kelley Heyer comes up with a dance for it that gains serious traction, with stars like Addison Rae and even Stephen Colbert trying it out.

Following the success of the dance, Charli shares a video to her personal account, in which she tries to get Daniel to try it. “Baby, why don’t you wanna do apple, though?” she asks at the beginning of the clip, talking to Daniel, who is standing off-screen. “I think you should do the apple dance. Why not? You can do it.” After a moment, Daniel says, “Are you filming me?” To which Charli smiles and pans the camera over to him. “Fuck off,” he says with a laugh.

April 2024: He appears on the cover art for two Brat singles.

Ahead of her Brat album release, Charli shares two promo singles, “Club Classics” and “B2B,” which are packaged together with a photo that sees Charli wrapping her arms around Daniel and looking into the camera. The musician serves as a cowriter and coproducer on the former track, while also contributing to another Brat song, “Apple.”

Daniel shares the art to his Instagram account and writes, “Romantic song we made out now!! @charli_xcx @agcook404 💚💚💚.” Meanwhile, Daniel gets a shout-out in “Club Classics,” when Charli sings: “Yeah, I wanna dance to me, I wanna dance to A.G. / I wanna dance with George, I wanna dance to SOPHIE.”

November 27, 2023: Charli leaks the news of their engagement.

In a private Instagram post, Charli reveals that she and Daniel are engaged to be married when she flashes an image of a diamond engagement ring on her hand. The following day, the singer shares a slideshow to her public account (which has since been deleted), where she writes, “charli xcx and george daniel f—ing for life!!!”

In the carousel, the first photo sees Daniel dipping Charli and giving her a kiss, while the second seems to reveal how the 1975 member proposed, with a picture of a tea tray featuring an engagement ring sitting in the center. Breakfast and a ring in bed? Not too shabby.

This comes a few months after Charli jokingly commented on a 1975 tour announcement post, saying, “Stop touring, George needs to buy a ring.”

May 23, 2023: Charli says her relationship with George has influenced her work.

In an interview with The Sun, Charli reveals that Daniel has had an influence on her creative process. “Now that I’m in a relationship with another musician he’s influenced me a lot with his process and how he and his band work,” she tells the outlet. “It’s really different to how I work and that has definitely influenced me and my process. I used to be very, ‘Quick, quick, quick, album a month, let’s go.’ Now I’m like, ‘Oh, maybe it’s cool to take some time and live in the music that you create.’ My process is definitely evolving.”

She adds, “I’ve always been very much a spontaneous, go in the room and see what happens type of a songwriter and I’ve never really cared to prep or think about what I want to say. But actually my process has completely changed and I’m thinking a lot more about being hyper-specific, especially with my lyrical content. To me that kind of takes like planning and thinking, I’m channeling my inner bitch a lot more.”
