Pinergy’s Shocking 7.6% Price Hike: What It Means for Your Wallet and Smart Investors Right Now
Ever wondered why your electricity bill suddenly feels like it’s doing a high-wire act without a safety net? Well, Pinergy’s about to turn up the dial on residential electricity prices next month, and it’s not because they simply felt like it. Blaming the turbulent waves from the conflict in the Middle East, wholesale energy costs have taken a spike that Pinergy says it just can’t swallow any longer. If you’re like most households, brace yourself for a 7.6% hike—that’s roughly an extra €169 a year, VAT included—starting September 14th. It’s the first time Pinergy’s bumped prices since last October, joining a chorus of other energy suppliers who’ve adjusted their rates recently. The CEO, Enda Gunnell, admits their hedging strategy has buffered customers from wild swings so far, but the relentless chaos in wholesale markets means the band-aid’s coming off. It’s a tough pill to swallow, especially now, but he’s urging anyone uneasy about the bill to reach out for support. So, how do you keep your energy costs in check when factors far beyond your meter keep pulling the strings? Let’s dive in. LEARN MORE
Pinergy is set to increase its residential electricity prices next month.
The energy company blamed the war in the Middle East, which has caused wholesale prices to spike.
Pinergy said the price hike will add 7.6% to the average household bill or €169 per year, including VAT, based on a domestic customer using typical consumption per annum on standard tariffs.
From 14 September, Pinergy’s 24-hour standard rate will increase to 42.02c per kWh excluding VAT.
Standing charges will remain unchanged at 71.25c per day and 77.65c in urban areas, excluding VAT.
It is the first price increase Pinergy has ordered since last October, with Electric Ireland, Yuno Energy, Flogas and PrePayPower having raised prices in recent months.
“Unfortunately, the continued volatility in wholesale energy markets has pushed costs to a level that we can no longer absorb,” said Enda Gunnell, CEO of Pinergy.
“Our hedging strategy has helped protect customers from much of the pricing volatility to date, but the scale and duration of what we’re seeing in wholesale markets means a change is now unavoidable.

“We understand this comes at a difficult time for many households, and we would encourage any customer who is concerned about their bill to get in touch with us directly for support.”
Pinergy’s daytime standard rate will increase by 43.15c, while the night-time standard rate will rise to 30.63c. Residential MicroGen payments will also remain unchanged at 18.5c.
