No matter your sport or activity of choice—walking, lifting, tennis, and beyond—you know the difference a great pair of shoes can make. In the running world, for example, our idea of what’s possible has completely transformed, thanks to the invention of “super shoes” (hello, sub-two-hour marathon!). Now, even everyday runners can reap the benefits of high-tech sneakers, from maximum cushioning that protects joints and preserves energy, to carbon plates to propel them to the finish line faster. The result? PRs that once felt out of reach—and an entirely new understanding about what our shoes can do for us.

But running isn’t the only category redefining the sneaker. Lifting shoes, hiking boots, and even daily kicks have evolved too. And, as always, the difference is in the details: fresh hybrid designs that transition seamlessly between different types of workouts, grippier soles for better stability on the trail, and added support in lifestyle options so you don’t have to sacrifice comfort for fashion.

That’s why this year’s Sneaker Awards are all about celebrating the 40-plus pairs that truly impressed us—the ones that got the tiniest elements right, and in doing so, offered us glimpse into the next generation of performance. Every pick on this list is brand-new, whether it’s a cutting-edge design or an upgraded take on a classic model. All are built to help you tackle your next challenge, so you, too, can reach a new level of what’s possible.

How We Tested—and Why You Should Trust Us

The WH fitness team—associate editors Olivia Luppino and Addison Aloian, CPT; editor Cori Ritchey, CSCS; executive director Jacqueline Andriakos, CPT; associate commerce editor Shannen Zitz; senior commerce editor Ryan Brower; and commerce editor Charles Thorpe, CPT—know sneakers. It’s our job to put the newest designs and technologies to the test and determine what’s worth your investment.

Throughout the past year, we evaluated hundreds of sneakers while training for marathons, competing in Hyrox, hustling through lifts, and, of course, navigating the streets of New York City. After many miles and reps logged, we curated a comprehensive list of the most impressive pairs.

But these aren’t just our personal faves. We polled our coworkers, close friends, and even our moms—die-hard exercisers and beginners alike—to get a sense of the shoes people loved most this year. And, because we have access to some of the greatest minds in health and fitness, we tapped an expert panel to get their perspective (more on them below).

Each pair of sneakers was worn multiple times, with several tested by more than one editor, to evaluate how they fared across a range of conditions and preferences. Every pick delivered the right blend of comfort (of the utmost importance), durability (because sneakers are not cheap), style (they’ve still gotta be cute…), and performance (because we gotta get stuff done!). One reoccurring theme in the feedback about our faves: You can rock them right out of the box—no breaking-in period necessary. Just step in, lace up, and go.
