The following story contains spoilers for House of the Dragon season 3, episode 7, “The Dragon in Winter.”

ONE OF THE highlights of what’s been a pretty damn solid season of House of the Dragon has been the subplot following a defeated, scarred, and somewhat disgraced Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) as he makes his way through Westeros, away from King’s Landing. One of the main tensions of this subplot has been following Aegon—whose still-huge ego doesn’t quite match the hard knock life that he’s been reduced to living in season 3. He’s been pushed down and forced to eat dirt (both figuratively and literally), while his loyal advisor Larys (Matthew Needham) has promised that this period of laying low is the right strategic move for him to eventually rise again.

All of this, really, is a testament to just how important all these dragons in House of the Dragon really are. Of course, almost all of Aegon’s misfortune comes in the aftermath of when his brother, Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and his powerful dragon Vhagar attacked him and his dragon, Sunfyre last season. This attack left Aegon on the brink of death, and Sunfyre, presumably, dead. Earlier in season 3, in fact, we spent a tender moment with Aegon as he visited Sunfyre’s motionless body and seemed to reluctantly come to terms with the fact that his beloved dragon was no more.

But… that may not have been the case. As Aegon’s frustrations continue to grow throughout season 3—and as the lower-born people around him continue to kick dirt in his face—he’s had enough. In “The Dragon in Winter,” the seventh episode of House of the Dragon’s third season, Aegon has had enough when he comes face to face with an army patrolling on behalf of Rhaenyra.

Aegon speaks up, revealing his identity, and refusing to back down. We already saw a key character accepting their imminent death via army last week, when Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) took a couple anti-climactic arrows to the chest and face before heading off to the great brothel in the sky, and it seemed like it might be happening again with Aegon. That is, until some powerful, strong steps, and loud, notable breathing began to come from behind him.

And, whoops, unfortunately for Rhaenyra’s army, it turned out that Sunfyre was indeed alive, to an overwhelmingly happy Aegon’s delight. One quick “Dracarys” declaration, and the former King took them all out in a massive blaze. Glynn-Carney absolutely crushes the moment (as he has all season long), and it’s a highlight of the season without question.

But we’re sure you’re all wondering about Sunfyre, and how they’re not dead. How? Well, here’s how.

How is Sunfyre Still Alive in House of the Dragon season 3, episode 7?

As many fans have noted, the idea that Sunfyre was dead was actually a shortsighted one. “In real life reptiles can go into a coma like state where their metabolism drops very low and they can appear dead,” a Reddit user named tiredoldwizard said a few weeks ago. “I agree it’s pretty obvious hes alive and him and Aegon are going to go on a revenge tour and fuck shit up,” An astute prediction proven correct!

Sunfyre, however, returned looking quite different. Just like Aegon, his rider, he’s badly scarred from the fire blast that Aemond and Vhagar put them through. But, like Aegon, Sunfyre is now back and ready to let people know that the power has returned.

Aegon’s utter glee in the moment of realizing his dragon was returned is actually one of the most pure moments of emotion in all of House of the Dragon to date.

“I think he truly did believe that Sunfyre was dead, and I think Sunfyre was very close to being dead,” the episode’s director, Nina Lopez-Carrado told Entertainment Weekly. “During the time period in which he was laying there, he did rejuvenate so that he was able to come back. I think a part of his healing process truly had to do with the fact that when Aegon was there, he was gonna die. So I think it helped him rejuvenate enough strength to come back and save him.”

So, as it turns out, that moment between Aegon and Sunfyre earlier in the season proved more important than we ever thought. And now, could set a path of fury going forward, if not in next week’s season finale, than in the forthcoming fourth and final season of House of the Dragon. All of a sudden, Aegon is a major player in this dance once again.
