Wearing a fitness tracker to learn more about everything from my HRV to how long I spent in REM sleep the night before is one of my favorite tools for optimizing my health and fitness. However, sometimes I go through phases of just not wanting to wear a wearable fitness tracker like my Whoop on my wrist 24/7 — but still wanting to track things like my sleep. In other words, I want the data but I don’t want to have to wear anything to get it. Sounds impossible, I know, which is why I was incredibly intrigued when I heard about the contactless sleep tracking that’s now available from the newly released Hatch Sleep Clock.

Why am I so excited about contactless sleep tracking? When I am in the mode of wearing a fitness tracker all the time, some of the data I find most interesting and actionable is the sleep data.

Sleep tracking has been the springboard for some of the biggest health and life changes I’ve implemented in my day-to-day routine, all as a result of knowing more about what’s going on while I’m asleep (or not). For example, I can see the cause and effect of consuming caffeine after a certain point in the day or too much screentime before I go to bed in the sleep metrics I see in the morning, usually in the form of less deep sleep and more time spent tossing and turning.

I’ve also found it to be a powerful tool in staying in tune with my body, which allows me to give it what it needs during the day. Maybe that looks like yoga and a nap on a day after a not-so-restful-night, and HIIT after a night I slept like a baby. But up until now, I had to wear a fitness tracker to get this personal sleep intel.

This is where the Hatch Sleep Clock comes in. I’m already a big fan of the Hatch Restore, and its new sibling in the brand’s lineup has the same tailored sunrise wake up experience that I like, designed to mimic a natural sunrise that makes for a way more gentle and relaxing start to the day than a jolting alarm (this feature alone has transformed my mornings).

Fans of the Hatch Restore (like me) will still find all of the features they know and love in the new Hatch Sleep Clock with the addition of contactless sleep tracking—the device features tech designed to track your sleep stages and sleep/wake cycles from your nightstand, capturing the data from the person sleeping closest to it. Nothing to attach to your body, nothing to recharge, and no subscription required.

I was skeptical upon first hearing about it, but there is some impressive research behind the technology validating its performance in comparison to polysomnography, aka a sleep study. We’re preparing for an in-depth test of the new Hatch Sleep Clock, and one of things we’ll be testing is how its data compares to various wearable fitness trackers.

Beyond sleep tracking accuracy, we’ll be examining the more personal effect of not feeling the subtle pressure and stress of being scored on something the moment you wake up, which can sometimes happen with devices that provide a sleep score evaluating the previous nights’ sleep performance, which the Hatch Sleep Clock doesn’t do.

This alone might make it a better fit for someone who is just not that into fitness wearables or having all the metrics, all the time. Fitness and health tech shouldn’t be adding additional stress to anyone’s life—it’s all about finding the right device for you. Stay tuned for our upcoming review, but in the meantime check out some of the other fitness trackers we love.
