In the past, the fragrance world had a set of handcuffs on itself. Everything was clearly divided, clearly marketed into two categories: women’s perfumes, which tended to be light, powdery, and floral; and men’s colognes, which leaned darker, muskier, boozy, or leathery. But the honest truth is that no fragrance is inherently masculine or feminine. People like what they like, and the industry is catching up. We’re seeing a ton of new brands and fragrances being marketed as “unisex” or “genderless,” or they’re just playing around with scents that can’t be classified one way or the other. One of the brands that does that best is Henry Rose.

Founded by actress Michelle Pfeiffer in 2019 as a clean, genderless fragrance brand, Henry Rose has since released more than a dozen fine fragrances that can be appreciated by all kinds of people with all kinds of tastes. Most recently, the brand launched its Ripe Eau de Parfum, and it has quickly become my scent of the summer. I love it; my coworkers love it; even my boyfriend—who usually wears a spicy, musky cologne—loves it.

Fragrance Family Warm floral
Notes Lychee, watermelon sorbet, green leaves, cardamom, black pepper, jasmine, peony, rose water, wisteria, upcycled orcanox, soft woods, musks, creamy sandalwood
Sizes 0.27 oz, 1.7 oz

One of the reasons Ripe works so well is its perfect balance of warm florals with fresh fruits, soft woods, and musks. It starts out with juicy lychee and watermelon notes at the top mixed with a blend of spices, then moves into lush florals with jasmine, peony, rose water, and wisteria. It’s all grounded by a smooth, creamy base of musks and sandalwood, which provide a more neutral, woody base to an otherwise fruity, floral scent. It has the overall aroma of walking through a garden in bloom—absolutely perfect for spring and summer.

And at just $120 for a full-size bottle, it’s much more affordable than many other fine fragrance brands but is of the same top-tier, long-lasting quality. In fact, all of Henry Rose’s full-size EDPs are $120, including my other favorite from the brand, French Exit, which is also a beautiful warm floral—and one of our all-time favorite summer scents, the marine citrus Jake’s House EDP.
