Tim McGraw wants to set the record straight. He’s heard the rumors that he performed at the fabled Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce wedding this summer. But the three-time Grammy Award winner and recent inductee to the Country Music Hall of Fame reveals now that the headlines got it wrong.

“I didn’t perform at her wedding,” McGraw tells Esquire editor in chief Michael Sebastian in a new episode of “What I’ve Learned,” which you can listen to here. “That was a rumor,” he says.

But the “Live Like You Were Dying” singer confirms that he did attend the wedding with his wife, fellow country music powerhouse Faith Hill, as they celebrate thirty years of marriage together. He wishes the same for Swift. “Taylor’s always been close to our family, our girls,” McGraw says. “We couldn’t be happier for her to find Travis, who’s a cool guy as well.”

The lore between Tim McGraw and Taylor Swift goes back to the start of her own music career, with her 2006 single “Tim McGraw.” Then, in 2013, the two recorded McGraw’s “Highway Don’t Care” for his album Taste of Country. “She’s a special person, and one of the most talented people I’ve ever met,” McGraw says in the episode. “She’s the biggest artist in the world … but the biggest thing that maybe gets overlooked sometimes with Taylor, is the way she writes to connect with her audience. [It] is such an incredible thing.”

But did they leave the newlyweds any advice? What’s the secret to making a marriage work for three decades?

“Just a commitment that you want it to work,” McGraw tells Esquire. “People are so easy to walk away from troubled times or bad times, or times where you don’t get along. But going into a marriage and being in a marriage for a long time, you start to realize that, yeah, there are gonna be times you don’t like each other. There are times you don’t get along … But that’s not a reason to walk out the door.”

According to McGraw, “We made a commitment early on in our lives that [leaving] wasn’t going to be our first response to any kind of fight, or any kind of disagreement. Because the more you do that, that starts opening the door for that choice. It lessens the commitment, and it lessens the pride and respect that you have in your marriage.”

The singer adds that people change over time, which should not be a deal-breaker for any marriage. “You change as you grow older. And you change individually as you grow older, and you change as a couple as you grow older in time spent together. And so the beauty, I think, in a long marriage, is you get the chance to fall in love with a new person every so often. Because people change.”

The rest of McGraw’s “What I’ve Learned” conversation covers his growth as a father (which required him to learn patience, “another level of love that you didn’t know existed”), adapting to an empty nest household, and the story of how he learned he would be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

He also offers some advice to today’s younger men. “Just get out, be social,” McGraw says. “Being a man is how you treat people, and certainly how you treat women.” His thirty years of marriage can attest to that.
