This year, Japanese watchmaker Citizen is commemorating 50 years of its innovative Eco-Drive technology. It was the world’s first line-up of light-powered analogue watches, converting any light source into energy and removing the need for battery charges. As a part of the celebration, the brand has launched multiple limited-edition pieces and revealed unexpected collaborations, but the newest might be the most premium yet.

As a part of its ‘The Citizen’ line, the brand has launched the AQ4094-58L, a limited-edition watch with a distinctive deep blue dial crafted from traditional Japanese washi paper. It doesn’t just give the watch a unique textured appearance, but also serves a practical purpose: as the paper is semi-transparent, it allows light to pass through to the solar cells behind the watch’s dial. The best part is that, depending on where the light hits, the dial’s texture shifts, giving it a more statement look than first appears.

On the technological side, the watch is equally impressive. It’s powered by Citizen’s Calibre A060 Eco-Drive movement, which has a seven month power reserve, five seconds per year accuracy, and a perpetual calendar programmed through to 2100. The case and bracelet are crafted from Super Titanium, the brand’s alloy that’s five times more scratch resistant and 40 percent lighter than stainless steel.

Unfortunately, this one’s a Hong Kong-exclusive, priced at HK$32,880 (about $4,200), and is limited to just 400 pieces, fewer than the limited-edition green-dial watch that the brand put out last month. If you’re even thinking about grabbing one, make sure you do it before they run out for good.
