What is Electricity Demand Flexibility?
Electricity demand flexibility simply means using electricity at smarter times. Instead of everyone using power all at once, for example, cooking dinner, charging devices, and running appliances during the early evening, homes and businesses can shift some of that use to quieter times of the day.
Think of it like traffic on a motorway. If everyone drives at 5pm, you get congestion. If some drivers travel earlier or later, traffic flows better. Electricity works the same way: when too many people use power at the same time, it puts pressure on the grid.
Flexibility also means making better use of our renewable energy resources like wind and solar. Currently we are turning down over 10 per cent of available wind energy because the grid can’t accommodate it or there isn’t enough demand for it at the time.
By shifting electricity use to times when the wind is blowing or the sun is shining we can use more of our cheaper renewable energy and reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels. This saves consumers money.
The Role of Flexible Connections
Flexible connections can facilitate better use of the existing electricity grid, helping businesses that produce everyday essentials like food and medicines to get the power they need more quickly and at a lower cost as they grow or switch to cleaner electric technologies. Traditional grid connections are designed to provide a guaranteed electricity supply at all times. However, this approach can require major upgrades to the electricity network and long lead times which often adds substantial costs for commercial and industrial businesses looking to electrify or increase their electricity demand.
Flexible grid connections offer an alternative solution by allowing businesses to connect earlier while accepting certain operational constraints on their grid access when the electricity network is under pressure.
For instance, the deployment of large EV charging hubs, electric bus depots, and fleet electrification infrastructure can require substantial electrical capacity. Flexible connections allow these facilities to connect to the grid earlier while managing peak demand periods.
For example, an electric bus charging depot may seek a timed connection where they only require access to their full grid capacity at night when they are charging their fleet, a period that naturally aligns with lower system demand and, increasingly, with overnight wind generation.
This means the customer can connect to the grid quicker, save money on their connection costs and it also avoids unnecessary grid build out.

The Path Forward
Ireland Electrified has published a position paper on flexible connections on our website. We are calling for a comprehensive framework to be established by the energy regulator and the network operators, ESB Networks and EirGrid, to enable the use of flexible connections and support customers seeking to electrify.
